Lebanon: Geagea calls for early parliamentary elections to solve crisis

03 Aug 2021; MEMO: The head of the Lebanese Forces party, Samir Geagea, yesterday called for early parliamentary elections to be held in order to resolve Lebanon's crises.

Geagea's call came during a rally organised by his party in Beirut to commemorate the first anniversary of the Beirut post explosion which killed more than 200 people and wounded 7,000 others on 4 August 2020.

"The radical treatment for Lebanon's crisis will only take place by changing the ruling group, through parliamentary elections as soon as possible," Geagea said, adding that "those responsible for the port explosion" will be "prosecuted" no matter how much they try to obstruct justice.

The next parliamentary elections in Lebanon are scheduled for March 2022. However, observers fear the Parliament will extend its mandate under the pretext of "exceptional security conditions".
