India: Ram Rai Ki Sarai in Kanpur's Jajmau exists in name only

Kanpur: While standing on one side of the 150-feet wide road in the morning, one finds a locality’s name as Ram Rai Ki Sarai on a big board stuck by the brick wall of the girl’s school building in Jajmau.

The name was of course written but the younger generation scarcely knows of the site once existed here.

Those who are well aware of this older locality in Kanpur’s Tannery Town tell of the locale but fail to show its vestiges.

When the person tried to enquire about the Sarai the other two accepted that its traces are not observed all over the area.

However, the two young men told him that we find the name in important documentary papers. Even our postal addresses carry the name. They even went on to indicate the proper location of the Sarai.

They expressed at last that the Sarai was spread into a larger tract of land. Very narrow lanes are existing in the Sarai space at present.

After much insistence, one bearded man of the locality in his philosophical comment maintained if you are informed of an important old site hidden somewhere near your dwelling, would you look for it in one hundred different paths or would you try to get at the straight direction to look?

Even in these highly positive times, the historical facts are always manageable to talk about. That’s why this topic of Sarai relics has been interrogated.

Unlike most subjects, where there is no real tangible finding, only conversation ends on forgotten facts tremendously.

Sarai remains to be a part of history and it also remains alive in our daily discussion. As the Jajmau area is now highly crowded and changed, the older areas of this locale remain obliterating. It is divided into Purani Chungi and Nai Chungi.

Though the areas around Nai Chungi are vastly changing with the expansion of the modern-day shops, it also consists of different malls.

Out of curiosity, a young married man counted the total of small and big marts existing in the area.

There is no dearth of modern restaurants and hotels here. There is no denying the fact that Sarai has now been endowed with ultra-mod amenities.
