Nigerian police repel attack at checkpoint, killing shooter

LAGOS, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian police said on Monday that they have killed a shooter after repelling an armed attack at a police checkpoint in the northern state of Katsina.

Gambo Isah, spokesman of Katsina State police, said police operatives engaged a group of shooters in a fierce gun battle, successfully repelling the attack at the checkpoint on the Magamar-Jibia road in the Jibia local government area of the state on Monday.

Many of the shooters escaped with gunshot injuries, said the spokesman in a statement, adding that two police officers also sustained injuries.

Police operatives are still combing the area in pursuit of the escaped shooters, he added.
