RAMALLAH, April 18 (Xinhua) -- At least eight Palestinians were shot and injured on Tuesday during clashes with Israeli soldiers in a refugee camp of Jenin in the northern West Bank, Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement.
The injured Palestinians were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment after the clashes, according to the statement.
Israeli soldiers, backed by an armored vehicle and a bulldozer, stormed the Palestinian refugee camp and surrounded several buildings while reconnaissance drones hovered overhead, Palestinian eyewitnesses said.
Fierce clashes broke out between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli soldiers after they stormed the refugee camp, the eyewitnesses said, adding the clashes continued until the Israeli soldiers pulled out from the area.
Meanwhile, an Israeli army spokesman said in a press statement that the Israeli army carried out a security activity in the Jenin area and detained two Palestinians wanted by Israeli security forces for being involved in plotting attacks against Israel.
In order to arrest Palestinians wanted by Israeli security forces, Israeli soldiers have been conducting daily raids on Palestinian towns, cities, and refugee camps in the West Bank in recent months.
According to official Palestinian figures, 4,900 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli jails and prisons, and most of them were arrested during Israeli raids on the West Bank in the past two years.
