KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's wholesale and retail trade recorded a monthly sales value of 136 billion ringgit (29.45 billion U.S. dollars) in April, growing 6.3 percent year-on-year, official data showed Monday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the growth was attributed to the retail trade sub-sector, which increased 12.9 percent to 60.5 billion ringgit, supported by retail sales in non-specialized stores.

Wholesale trade also expanded by 3.2 percent to 60.9 billion ringgit, underpinned by the rise of wholesale food, beverages and tobacco.

However, the motor vehicles sector declined by 5.1 percent to 14.6 billion ringgit, dragged down by sales of motor vehicles.

For month-on-month comparison, the sales value of wholesale and retail trade inched down 1.8 percent, dragged by falls in motor vehicles and wholesale trade sub-sectors.
