TEHRAN, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Friday proposed convening an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to gather foreign ministers of member states to discuss the recent burning of the Muslim holy book Quran in Sweden.
He made the remarks in a phone call with OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha while strongly condemning the "insulting and provocative move" in Sweden, according to a statement published on the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website.
Amir-Abdollahian suggested that the OIC hold the emergency meeting at the earliest possible opportunity on the sideline of the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku on July 5-6.
Taha, for his part, said holding an emergency meeting at the level of the member states' ambassadors and permanent representatives is on the agenda of OIC, adding that he will discuss with member states Iran's proposal.
The OIC chief welcomed Iran's condemnation of the "sacrilegious" act of Quran burning in Sweden, noting that Iran has an "important" role and status in the OIC.
A Swedish citizen of Iraqi origin reportedly tore up and burnt a copy of the Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm on Wednesday during a demonstration authorized by the Swedish authorities, which sparked furious reactions from Muslims worldwide.
On Thursday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden's charge d'affaires in Tehran and protested against the "sacrilegious" act.
