Oil from spill in Brazil washes up in Rio state

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Oil from a spill that has contaminated a stretch of Brazil’s coast was detected in Rio de Janeiro state, the navy said, as President Jair Bolsonaro warned the country was preparing for the worst.

Some 300g – a small quantity of oil – were found far from the region’s most famous beaches, in the sand in the town of Sao Joao da Barra, as the spill moves southward.

The town is located about 300km north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s tourism capital, and far from the state’s most emblematic beaches such as Copacabana.

Bolivia’s parliament approves bill on snap presidential election

RIO DE JANEIRO, November 24. /TASS/: The Bolivian parliament’s Chamber of Deputies has voted in favor of holding new general elections, the lower house said in a Twitter post.

"The Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted to approve the bill on a special and transitional period for holding general elections," the tweet reads.

The document was earlier approved by Bolivia’s Senate. Now it will be sent to interim president Jeanine Anez for signature.

Bolsonaro launches new political party, Alliance for Brazil base on concepts of God, family and homeland

BRASILIA, Nov 23 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Brazil’s conservative president Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday launched a new political party called the Alliance for Brazil, which will put an emphasis on God, family and homeland, as he tries to win back evangelical voters.

“If I had done this sooner, we would have gotten 100 deputies and a senator elected in each state,” Bolsonaro said at a formal launch event in a luxury hotel in the capital Brasilia.

Brazil ex-president, out of jail, vows to make ‘lives hell’

SAO PAULO (AP) — A fired-up former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, freshly out of jail, vowed to fight Brazil’s far-right government and the forces he says unjustly incarcerated him, saying he would make “their lives hell.”

“They don’t know what it is to face a 74-year-old passionate man,” da Silva, who governed Brazil from 2003 to 2010, and became one of the world’s most popular politicians before being ensnared in corruption scandals, told cheering supporters late Friday.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro Officially Leaves Party

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 21 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, officially left the Social Liberal Party (PSL) on Tuesday, as he prepared to launch his own political party.

Bolsonaro joined PSL last year, to take part in the presidential race. However, he and Luciano Bivar, PSL president, have been at odds for months now, and their disagreements culminated in Bolsonaro’s decision to leave the party.

Brazil's freed leftist leader Lula calls to continue 'the fight'

Recife (Brazil), Nov 18 (AFP) Brazil's left-wing leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged his followers to continue "the fight" Sunday evening at his first major rally since his release from prison a week ago.

"The fight isn't over," the former president chanted to several tens of thousands of cheering supporters in the northeastern city of Recife.

In swipe at US, BRICS hit out at protectionism

BRASILIA, Nov 15 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Five of the biggest emerging economies railed against protectionism as they vowed to overcome “significant challenges” facing multilateralism, in a swipe at US tariffs and unilateral action.

The joint declaration by BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – came on the second day of the annual gathering, which Brazilian host President Jair Bolsonaro used to boost ties with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Brasilia, Nov 14; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held in-depth talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping here and the two leaders have agreed to maintain close contact on matters relating to trade and investment to further deepen and add new vigour to India-China relations.

During the meeting held on the margins of the 11th BRICS Summit on Wednesday, prime minister Modi said there was a "new direction and new energy" in bilateral ties after their second informal summit in Chennai last month.

1. We, the Leaders of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa met on 14 November 2019 in Brasilia, Brazil, at the Eleventh BRICS Summit, which was held under the theme "BRICS: economic growth for an innovative future".
