Western artillery already making difference for Ukraine -regional governor

MYKOLAIV, Ukraine, June 8 (Reuters) - Western-supplied artillery systems are already making a difference on the ground for Ukraine and it is "just a question of time" before its forces win back significant ground in the south, the governor of the Mykolaiv region said on Wednesday.

Governor Vitaliy Kim, whose region is partially occupied by Russia but remains just one of two that retains significant access to the Black Sea, told Reuters that Ukrainian forces had "some success" in recent weeks in a counterattack in the neighbouring Kherson region.

Ukraine says troops hold on Sievierodonetsk, advance in south

KYIV/SLOVIANSK, Ukraine, June 9 (Reuters) - Ukrainian troops claimed on Thursday to have pushed forward in intense street fighting in the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, but said their only hope to turn the tide was more artillery to offset Russia's massive firepower.

In the south, Ukraine's defence ministry said it had captured new ground in a counter-attack in Kherson province, aiming at the biggest swathe of territory Russia has seized since its invasion in February.

200 bodies found in Mariupol as war rages in Ukraine’s east

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Workers digging through rubble found 200 bodies in Mariupol, Ukrainian authorities said Tuesday, another grim discovery in the ruined port city that has seen some of the worst suffering of the 3-month-old war.

The bodies found in the basement of a collapsed apartment building were in a state of decomposition and a stench permeated the neighborhood, said Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the city’s mayor.

Russia steps up shelling, seeking gains in Ukraine’s Donbas

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Heavy fighting was raging in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, where Russian forces have stepped up their bombardments beyond the frontlines, Britain’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

Moscow faces stiff Ukrainian resistance to its effort to encircle the area around the city of Sievierodonetsk and consolidate Russian control of the Luhansk region — the main focus but not the only Russian effort in the campaign to capture the Donbas, the ministry said in the update posted on Twitter.

Ukraine:Recent attack on Desna killed 87; Zelenskyy

Kyiv, May 24 (AP-PTI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says last week's attack on the town of Desna resulted in 87 deaths. Desna is 55 kilometers north of Kyiv.

Zelenskyy said the debris removal in Desna, in the Chernihiv region, has been completed and the deaths and destruction was cause by only four missiles.

Russian sentenced to life in Ukraine’s 1st war crimes trial

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian soldier who pleaded guilty to killing a Ukrainian civilian was sentenced to life in prison on Monday in the first war crimes trial since Moscow invaded three months ago, unleashing a brutal conflict that has led to accusations of atrocities, left thousands dead, driven millions from their homes and flattened whole swaths of cities.

Ukraine: Energodar mayor, his two guards suffer wounds in explosion

ENERGODAR, May 22. /TASS/: Energodar Mayor Andrey Shevchik and his two guards were wounded in an explosion, a local law enforcer told TASS on Sunday.

"Energodar Mayor Andrey Shevchik and his two guards were wounded in an explosion suffered wounds in an explosion in the entrance way of his house today," the person said. "A homemade explosive device was planted inside an electric wiring box in the entrance way."

The law enforcer said Shevchik had repeatedly received threats from Ukraine. The blast detonated as the mayor entered his apartment building.

Ukraine withdraws from several CIS agreements

KIEV, May 22. /TASS/: Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) has approved a bill on the country’s withdrawal from the agreement on the perpetuation of the memory about the heroism of the peoples of the CIS member states during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, leader of the Servant of the People party Elena Shulyan said on Sunday.
