At least 30 killed in Libya military academy attack

Tripoli (Reuters) - At least 30 people were killed and 33 others wounded in an attack on a military academy in the Libyan capital late on Saturday, the health ministry of the Tripoli-based government said in a statement on Sunday.

Tripoli, controlled by the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA), is facing an offensive by military commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) that began in April.

Airstrike Supporting Haftar Kills 28 Students Of Military Academy In Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Jan 5 (NNN-XINHUA) – An airstrike hit a military academy in the Libyan capital Tripoli, late on Saturday, killing 28 students and injuring 18 others.

“Initial casualties indicate that 28 students of the military academy were killed and 18 others were injured, as a result of an airstrike by foreign air force, supporting the war criminal, Haftar (commander of the eastern-based army),” the UN-backed government’s forces said, in a statement.

Libya's east-based parliament votes to cut ties with Turkey

TRIPOLI, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Libya's east-based House of Representatives on Saturday voted to cut ties with Turkey after Turkish approval of sending troops to Libya to support the UN-backed government.

"The House of Representatives (the parliament) voted unanimously ... to cancel security and military cooperation and deny maritime deals signed between" the UN-backed government and Turkey, said Abdullah Bhelig, parliament spokesman, in a statement.

Libya: Haftar's army declares mobilization against Turkish military interference in Libya

TRIPOLI, Jan 4 (NNN-Xinhua) — The commander of the east-based Libyan rebel army on Friday declared military mobilization against Turkey’s plan to send troops to Libya to support the UN-backed government.

General Khalifa Haftar declared the mobilization in a televised speech, saying the ongoing fighting will intensify, and the battle “is no longer for the liberation of the capital.”

The Turkish parliament passed a motion in an emergency session on Thursday, authorizing the government to deploy troops in Libya for a one-year period.

Deadly airstrike hits Libya's Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A civilian was killed and two others were injured on Sunday when an airstrike hit east of the Libyan capital Tripoli, according to a medical official.

Osama Ali, spokesman of Health Ministry's Emergency Department, said the airstrike hit a residential area in eastern Tripoli, killing a woman and injuring two foreign workers.

The casualties of the airstrike are likely to increase as medical emergency teams are still carrying out rescue operations in the area, the spokesman said.

TRIPOLI, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Forces of the UN-backed Libyan government on Saturday announced an advance against the rival east-based army in southern Tripoli.

According to the information office of the UN-backed government's forces, two tanks and an armored vehicle of the east-based army were destroyed.

The east-based army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
