Hong Kong people look forward to implementation of law on safeguarding national security in HK

HONG KONG, June 22 (Xinhua) -- People from various sectors in Hong Kong are looking forward to the early implementation of the law on safeguarding national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and hope the new law will ensure Hong Kong's long-term peace and order.

The draft law was submitted for deliberation at the 19th session of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress from June 18 to 20.

China launches final satellite in GPS-like Beidou system

BEIJING (AP) — China on Tuesday launched the final satellite in its Beidou constellation that emulates and may seek to compete with the U.S. Global Positioning System, marking a further step in the country’s advance as a major space power.

The launch of the satellite onboard a Long March-3 rocket was broadcast live from the satellite launch base of Xichang, deep in the mountains of southwestern China, shortly before 10 a.m. About half an hour later, the satellite was deployed in orbit and extended its solar panels to provide its energy.

China warns of reprisal as Japanese city changes disputed area name

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Monday it reserves the right to respond to a Japanese city’s decision to rename the administrative area that includes remote islands claimed by both China and Japan and have long been a source of friction between the neighbours.

The row over the uninhabited East China Sea islets may add to recent tension caused by Japan’s criticisms of Beijing’s plan to impose a new national security law in Hong Kong.

China has said Japan should not interfere in Beijing’s internal affairs.

Experts say U.S. signing of bill on Xinjiang interferes in China's internal affairs

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The signing of a so-called human rights act related to China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region by the United States has interfered in China's internal affairs, experts have said.

"Intervention in the internal affairs of sovereign states is one of the most dangerous actions of our generation," Tursunali Kuziev, a professor at Uzbekistan State University of World Languages, warned.

China to Canada PM: Stop ‘irresponsible remarks’ on spy case

BEIJING (AP) — China told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday to “stop making irresponsible remarks” after he said Beijing’s decision to charge two Canadians with spying was linked to his country’s arrest of a Chinese tech executive.

The spying charges are “completely different” from the case of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, a foreign ministry spokesman said. Meng was arrested on U.S. charges connected to possible violations of trade sanctions on Iran.

Beijing tests nearly 2.3 million people for COVID-19

BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 2.3 million people in Beijing have received nucleic acid tests over the past week as the city strives to contain domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, local authorities said Saturday.

Beijing authorities have set up a total of 2,083 sampling sites in 474 locations across the city, with 7,472 medical staffers taking shifts to conduct tests.

COVID-19 vaccine reaches phase-2 trials in China

BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- An inactivated COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the Institute of Medical Biology under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences has entered phase-2 clinical trials in China, the Science and Technology Daily reported Saturday.

The phase-2 trials, which further evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of the vaccine in humans, are conducted in the southwestern province of Yunnan.
