China says trade envoys agree on phone to continue talks

Beijing, Nov 26 (AP/PTI) China's Commerce Ministry says the lead envoys in trade talks between China and the US spoke on the phone and agreed to continue to work toward a preliminary agreement for resolving their tariff war.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry said in a brief notice that Vice Premier Liu He spoke with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin early Tuesday Beijing time.

China summons U.S. ambassador to lodge representations, protest against Congress passing of HK-related act

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang on Monday summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad to lodge stern representations and strong protest against both the House of the Representatives and Senate passing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.

China urges the United States to correct its mistake immediately, stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's other internal affairs, Zheng said.

E-commerce giant Alibaba’s shares jump 8% in Hong Kong debut

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s shares jumped more than 8% in their debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Tuesday, an auspicious start at a time when the former British colony is reeling from political unrest.

By mid-afternoon Tuesday, Alibaba was trading at 190.45 Hong Kong dollars ($24.33) per share. Its offering price was 176 Hong Kong dollars.

The company’s shares already are listed in New York, where its 2014 IPO set a record at $25 billion.

Hong Kong leader refuses to give ground despite poll setback

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s embattled leader Carrie Lam refused to offer any concessions to anti-government protesters despite a local election trouncing, saying Tuesday that she will instead accelerate dialogue and identify ways to address societal grievances.

Lam said the central government in Beijing didn’t blame her for the election outcome that gave the pro-democracy bloc a landslide victory with 90 percent of seats and control of 17 out of 18 district councils.

China central bank says downward pressure on economy is increasing

BEIJING (Reuters) - Downward pressure on the Chinese economy is increasing and potential risks and problems will be difficult to eliminate in the short term, China’s central bank said on Monday.

The People’s Bank of China, in its annual financial stability report, said China will continue to implement proactive fiscal policy and prudent monetary policy.

China mandates 13 banks for U.S. dollar bond issue, seeks to raise over $3 billion

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China’s government has mandated 13 investment banks to lead a U.S. dollar sovereign bond deal, according to a term sheet seen by Reuters, its third since its international debt issuance program was revived two years ago.

A banker with direct knowledge of the transaction said China would likely seek to raise more than $3 billion, in line with the size of last year’s deal.

HONG KONG (AP) — The pro-democracy opposition won a resounding victory in Hong Kong elections, according to media tallies, in a clear rebuke to city leader Carrie Lam and her handling of violent protests that have divided the Chinese territory.
