India: SC declines permission to carry out Muharram procession across country

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday declined permission for carrying out Muharram procession across the country and asked Lucknow-based petitioner to move before the Allahabad High Court with his plea.

The apex court said how can it pass a general order for the whole country.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said it would lead to chaos and targeting of a particular community.

Audi RS Q8 launched in India, price starts at Rs 2.07 cr

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) German luxury carmaker Audi on Thursday launched its latest SUV, Audi RS Q8, in India with price starting at Rs 2.07 crore.

The Audi RS Q8 is powered by a turbo 4-litre petrol engine delivering power of 600hp that can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph under four seconds. It combines the elegance of a premium coupe and the ability of an SUV, Audi India said in a statement.

COVID-19 can affect almost all organs, symptoms maybe unrelated to lungs

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) COVID-19 can affect almost all organs besides the lungs and the initial symptoms may be totally unrelated to chest complaints, according to experts at AIIMS here.

They stressed that classification of cases into mild, moderate and severe categories based just on respiratory symptoms should be relooked to include other organ involvement.

India: 200,000 Ola, Uber drivers in Delhi threaten to go on strike from Sept 1

New Delhi, Aug 27(PTI) Drivers working with mobility platforms Ola and Uber have threatened to go on strike in Delhi-NCR from September 1 in support of their various demands like fare hike and extension of moratorium on repayment of loans.

Around 2 lakh drivers working with cab aggregators will take part in the strike if the government fails to solve our problems, said Kamaljeet Singh Gill, president of Sarvodaya Drivers Association of Delhi.

India: Record 75,760 COVID-19 cases in single day

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) Registering over 75,000 COVID-19 cases for the first time in a span of 24 hours, India's virus tally sprinted past 33 lakh on Thursday, while the number of recoveries crossed the 25 lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

A record 75,760 infections were added in a day, taking the total coronavirus caseload to 33,10,234. The death toll climbed to?60,472 with 1,023 fatalities being reported in 24 hours,?the data updated at 8 am showed.

India: SC refers 2009 contempt case against Bhushan to other bench

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) The Supreme Court Tuesday decided to refer to another bench the 2009 contempt case against activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan and journalist Tarun Tejpal to deal with certain larger questions related to freedom of speech and levelling of corruption charges against the judiciary.

The apex court in November 2009, had issued contempt notice to Bhushan and Tejpal for allegedly casting aspersions on some sitting and former top court judges in an interview to a news magazine. Tejpal was the editor of the magazine.

Delhi: Kejriwal calls urgent meet on COVID situation

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called a high-level meeting to discuss the rising number of novel coronavirus cases in Delhi, sources said on Wednesday.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain, Chief Secretary Vijay Dev and senior officials will attend the meeting, which will take place at 11 am, according to sources.

The city recorded 1,544 more COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths on Tuesday. It was the first time in over a month that the number of new infections crossed the 1,500 mark.

India: Without salary, maths teacher sells bags for living

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Mohammad Faizi has not received his salary since March and is unable to pay school fee of his two daughters. The mathematics teacher has now taken to selling cloth bags at a weekly market in Delhi's Dilshad Garden.

Weekly markets in the national capital, which remained shut since March-end due to the coronavirus lockdown, reopened on Monday after the Delhi government allowed it till August 30 on a trial basis.

India: Govt needs to spend more, not lend more: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the government over the state of the economy and said it needs to give money to the poor to restart the economy through consumption.

Gandhi said "distractions" through media won't help the poor or make the "economic disaster disappear".

India: It is not about a post, but about country: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, Aug 25 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who is among the 23 party leaders who have written to Sonia Gandhi seeking an organisational overhaul, said on Tuesday that "it is not about a post" but about the country that matters most.

A day after a stormy Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Sibal made the remarks in a cryptic tweet.

"It's not about a post. It's about my country which matters most," he tweeted, without elaborating.
