Project to turn India into majoritarian nation has 'crippled' economy

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) In a scathing attack on the government, the Congress on Tuesday said the condition of the economy is a "man-made tragedy" and the "project" to turn India into a majoritarian nation has "completely crippled" its economic development.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari also said the slowdown has a humanitarian side to it as manifested in death due to heart attack of Sanjay Gulati, an account holder in the Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank, and alleged suicide of Cafe Coffee Day founder V G Siddhartha.

India: We will fight and win the next war with indigenous weapon systems: Army Chief

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat on Tuesday pitched for greater inclusion of indigenous technology in the armed forces and asserted that India will fight and win the next war with home-grown solutions.

In his address at the 41st DRDO Directors Conference, he also said the development of weaponry and other systems should be done keeping "future warfare" in mind.

India: Retail inflation scales 14-mth high of 3.99 pc in Sept

New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI) Retail inflation climbed to a 14-month high of 3.99 per cent in September due to costlier vegetables and pulses but still remained within the RBI's comfort zone, government data showed on Monday.

The Consumer Price Index-based inflation stood at 3.28 per cent in August and 3.70 per cent in the September 2018. The previous high was 4.17 per cent in July 2018.

However, the wholesale inflation in September slipped to an over three-year low of 0.33 per cent.

Indian PM should attend to work, have less photo ops: Sibal

New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Tuesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Banerjee's remarks that the Indian economy is on shaky ground, saying the PM should attend to work and have less "photo ops".

Indian-American Banerjee, who on Monday won the 2019 Nobel for Economics, has said Indian economy is on a shaky ground and the data currently available does not hold any assurance for the country's economic revival anytime soon.

India: Chidambaram produced before court in INX case

New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI) Former finance minister P Chidambaram was produced before a Delhi court Monday in connection with the INX Media money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate.

Chidambaram, who is in judicial custody till October 17 in the INX Media corruption case filed by the CBI, was produced before special judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar.

The ED had on Friday moved a plea seeking production warrant of the 74-year old senior Congress leader.

India: Two arrested for snatching handbag of PM Modi's niece

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) Two men were arrested for allegedly snatching the handbag of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's niece Damyanti Ben Modi, police said on Sunday.

Two men had wrenched the handbag from Damayanti Ben's grasp when she was alighting from an auto-rickshaw Saturday morning in North Delhi's Civil Lines area. The bag contained Rs 56,000, two mobile phones, some documents and other valuables.

Based on a complaint by her, police registered a case and later identified the two snatchers.

India: Prohibitory orders clamped in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, Oct 14 (PTI) Prohibitory orders under section 144 have been clamped in Ayodhya as the Supreme Court's revised deadline for wrapping up the proceedings in the sensitive Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case approaches.

The prohibitory orders will continue till December 10, officials said.

Posting the order on his official Twitter account, District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Jha said,"The order has been issued considering safety and security of Ayodhya and those visiting here as Govt's paramount concerns."

Indian PM Modi to inaugurate Kartarpur corridor on Nov 8

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Kartarpur corridor to Sri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan on November 8, Union Minister Harsimrat Badal said.

Modi will inaugurate the integrated check post on the Indian side, she said.

"With the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Sikh Panth's ardaas for 'khule darshan deedar' of Sri Kartarpur Sahib to finally become reality! On November 8th, history will be created with PM Narendra Modi ji inaugurating the Kartarpur corridor (ICP)," Badal tweeted.
