India: Rahul Gandhi greets people on Constitution Day

New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday greeted the people of the country on Constitution Day, and said it is the responsibility of all to ensure that justice and rights are equal for all.

Constitution Day is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

"Justice and rights should be equal for all so that the Constitution does not become just a paper, it is the responsibility of all of us," Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Subramanian Swamy meets West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) BJP leader Subramanian Swamy met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday in the national capital, days after his meeting with the state's Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in Kolkata.

After meeting the Trinamool Congress chief, Swamy said they discussed the political scenario in West Bengal. The duo even posed for photographs after their meeting.

When asked if he will join the Trinamool Congress, the BJP leader said, "I was already with her. There is no need for me to join."

India: Active COVID-19 cases in country lowest in 539 days

New Delhi, Nov 25 (PTI) India logged 9,119 new coronavirus infections taking the country's total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,45,44,882, while the active cases declined to 1,09,940, the lowest in 539 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The death toll climbed to 4,66,980 with 396 fresh fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.

The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been below 20,000 for 48 straight days and less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 151 consecutive days now.

India: Driverless train operations on Pink Line in Delhi flagged off

New Delhi, Nov 25 (PTI) In another milestone for the DMRC, driverless train operations on 59-km Pink Line of the Delhi Metro were flagged off on Thursday.

With this, the total stretch of DMRC's network which is under driverless operations, now stands at close to 97 km, putting Delhi Metro at fourth position globally among such networks, officials said.

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot jointly flagged off the driverless train operations via video conference.

India: CBI arrests enforcement officer of EPFO in bribery case

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI) The CBI on Tuesday arrested an enforcement officer of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation in a case of alleged bribery of Rs one lakh, officials said.

The action came on a complaint that Anil Kumar, the enforcement officer posted at Jagadhari in Haryana, had opened an inquiry against the complainant under the Code of Civil Procedure.

The complainant alleged the inquiry was opened even though all dues for the period of November 2018 to July 2019 relating to the provident fund of the employees of his firm were deposited.

India: Construction of 3.61 lakh houses under PMAY (U) approved

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) The Centre has approved the construction of 3.61 lakh houses in 17 states and union territories under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), taking the total number of houses sanctioned under the scheme to 1.14 crore, a statement said on Wednesday.

The approval was given by the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) chaired by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra on Tuesday.

India: Govt extends 5-kg free foodgrains scheme till March 2022

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) The Union Cabinet on Wednesday decided to extend till March the free foodgrains supply under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) to provide relief to ration cardholders.

The 5 kg foodgrain per person per month is being provided free of cost to more than 80 crore beneficiaries under the PMGKAY.

The scheme was initially launched for three months from April 2020 to provide relief to poor people amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the nationwide lockdown. It has been extended several times since then.

India: Delhi riots: Court frames arson charges against father-son for setting Mosque on fire

New Delhi, Nov 22 (PTI) A Delhi court has framed charges of arson and rioting against a father-son duo for allegedly damaging and setting a Mosque on fire, vandalism, and stone-pelting during the February 2020 riots.

Mithhan Singh and his son Jony Kumar are accused of allegedly being part of a violent mob that raised slogans Jai Shree Ram and damaged the mosque in Delhi's Khajuri Khas area on February 25, 2020, as per the complainant.

India: Congress leader Kirti Azad to join TMC

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI) Congress leader Kirti Azad will join the Trinamool Congress in Delhi on Tuesday, sources in the Mamata Banerjee-led party said.

Ashok Tanwar, who quit the Congress in October 2019 and launched his own party, and former JD(U) general secretary Pavan Varma will also join the TMC, they said.

Banerjee, who is in Delhi, always meets Congress president Sonia Gandhi during her visits. However, the TMC sources indicated that the West Bengal chief minister may give it a miss this time.
