Egypt: Cargo Ship Refloated After Running Aground In Suez Canal

CAIRO, Mar 6 (NNN-MENA) – A cargo ship was refloated, after being stranded in Egypt’s Suez Canal for two hours, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced, yesterday.

Four SCA tugboats succeeded to refloat the MSC-ISTANBUL cargo vessel, which went aground while crossing from the south to the north, said George Safwat, spokesperson of the SCA.

Earlier, SCA Chairman, Osama Rabie, said, the navigation movement in the Suez Canal was not affected by this emergency.

Egyptian President, Iraqi PM Met On Bilateral, Regional Affairs

CAIRO, Mar 6 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, here yesterday to discuss issues of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed that sustained coordination is a must for facing challenges and restoring peace and stability in the region, according to the Egyptian Presidency.

Sisi highlighted Egypt’s unwavering support for Iraq and its people at all levels, particularly in the fight against terrorism and for the country’s security and stability.

Egypt: Scientists reveal hidden corridor in Great Pyramid of Giza

CAIRO, March 2 (Reuters) - A hidden corridor nine metres (30 feet) long has been discovered close to the main entrance of the 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza, and this could lead to further findings, Egyptian antiquities officials said on Thursday.

The discovery within the pyramid, the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, was made under the Scan Pyramids project that since 2015 has been using non-invasive technology including infrared thermography, 3D simulations and cosmic-ray imaging to peer inside the structure.

UN rights committee to examine Egypt's human rights record

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: The United Nations Human Rights Committee will hold a two-day session this week to examine the Egyptian government's implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The ICCPR is an international human rights treaty ratified by Egypt in 1982 which commits states to respecting civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom of religion, speech, assembly, elections and due process.

Egypt reopens newly restored historic Mosque

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: Egypt's historic Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, named after the sixth Fatimid Caliph and located in old Cairo, was re-opened for visitors on Monday, 27 February, after renovations, Reuters reports.

The renovation project for Egypt's fourth oldest mosque, and its second largest, began in 2017 with a budget of 85 million Egyptian pounds ($2.8 million).

Panic as Mediterranean waters recede following quakes

26 Feb 2023; MEMO: Social networking sites have been abuzz with fears that the Mediterranean Sea is receding the Middle East by up to 20 metres since the large earthquakes that hit the region earlier this month.

Egypt's Sinai, Libya, Algeria and Palestine, including the city of Acre and some beaches in the Gaza Strip, have seen new rocks exposed on their beaches with tidal waters moving five to 20 metres, leading to fears that a tsunami will strike.

Egypt's Sisi dismisses rumours about selling Suez Canal for $1 trillion

27 Feb 2023; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday dismissed rumours that the Suez Canal would be sold for $1 trillion as a "lie".

"The war of terror is not over yet and it will not end as it is now represented in the abnormal volume of rumours, lies and fabrications, the latest of which was about the Suez Canal," Al-Sisi said during a ceremony held in the Ismailia governorate for the inspection of the equipment used in the Sinai development and reconstruction process.

Egypt: Saudi Arabia to send $410-mln humanitarian aid to Ukraine - top diplomat

CAIRO, February 26. /TASS/: Saudi Arabia will render humanitarian assistance to Ukraine worth 410 million US dollars, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud told a news conference in Kiev after his meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Sunday.

Egypt: Forcible disappearances 'increasingly widespread and systematic'

21 Feb 2023; MEMO: A group of Egyptian human rights organisations are demanding that the government stop forcible disappearances and that authorities carry out independent investigations into perpetrators.

Between 2013 and January 2023 the Stop Enforced Disappearance Campaign documented that over 3,600 people were forcibly disappeared.
