Russia’s Rosatom launches construction of second unit at Egypt nuclear power plant

CAIRO, November 19. /TASS/: The ceremony of pouring concrete at the second power unit of the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant (NPP) in Egypt took place on Saturday, Alexander Korchagin, senior vice-president of Atomstroyexport engineering division of Russia’s civilian nuclear power corporation Rosatom, told TASS on Saturday.

Egypt releases 30 pretrial detainees

16 Nov 2022; MEMO: The Egyptian Presidential Pardon Committee yesterday announced the release of 30 pretrial detainees.

The committee said in a statement that "procedures to release the 30 pretrial detainees have been completed" without giving further details about the released detainees or the charges levelled against them.

The release coincides with the United Nations COP27 Climate Summit currently taking place in the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Imprisoned Egyptian activist calls off hunger strike

CAIRO (AP) — The family of imprisoned Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah said Tuesday they received a letter from him saying he has ended his hunger strike.

In a statement, the family said that Abdel-Fattah’s mother, Laila Soueif, received a short note in her son’s handwriting via prison authorities. The letter is dated Monday. In it, he asks her to come for her monthly visit to him in prison on Thursday.

Egypt: Climate activist blasts leaders holding onto fossil projects

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate slammed world leaders Tuesday who persist in backing new fossil fuel projects despite science warnings that this will push temperatures across the planet to dangerous highs.

Countries agreed in the 2015 Paris climate accord to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) by the end of the century if possible. But scientists say that with about 1.2 Celsius (21. Fahrenheit) of warming already reached, that target is likely to be missed.

Biden, Egypt Sisi emphasise importance of US-Egypt partnership

Biden and the Egyptian President met on the sidelines of a key UN climate conference, which is being hosted in Egypt's resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh, during which the leaders "firmed their commitment to accelerating global efforts to tackle the climate crisis," the White House said in a statement.

UAE, Egypt Ink Deal To Build Mega Wind Farm

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov 10 (NNN-MENA) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt, agreed to develop one of the world’s largest onshore wind farms in Egypt, Egypt’s presidency said in a statement, on its website.

Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, to launch the 10-gigawatt wind power project in Egypt, the statement added.

Egypt: COP27 Focus should be climate, not jailed activist

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — The focus of the UN conference on climate change should be the negotiations to reduce emissions and not an Egyptian activist who is on a hunger and water strike, Egypt’s foreign minister said Thursday.

Asked about the case of Alaa Abdel-Fattah, where prison authorities intervened medically on Thursday after he went on hunger strike over his imprisonment, Sameh Shoukry, who is both foreign minister and the president of this year’s summit, made clear it was not a priority for him as chair of the 27th annual climate talks, known by their acronym COP27.
