Pakistan revises budget estimates due to flood relief, rehabilitation: PM

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov 7 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that due to relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people, Pakistan has revised its budget estimates.

He expressed these views during the meeting with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieve held here on the sidelines of COP-27 Summit.

The Prime Minister said that saving people’s lives and rehabilitation of the flood affected masses was the first priority of government.

Rarely-travelled Venezuelan Pres Maduro lands in Sharm El-Sheikh to participate in COP27 climate summit

CAIRO (Egypt), Nov 7 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, who rarely travels abroad except to friendly countries, Sunday landed at the Egyptian port city of Sharm el-Sheikh to participate in the COP27 Climate Summit.

Maduro pointed out through Twitter that “we will have an extensive working day to present Venezuela’s firm position against the destructive and polluting onslaught of the capitalist system on our planet Earth.”

COP27: UN chief tells climate summit, Cooperate or perish

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — With the world on “a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,″ the United Nations chief on Monday told dozens of leaders to ”cooperate or perish,” on avoiding further climate catastrophe, singling out the two biggest polluting countries, China and the United States.

UN weather report: Climate woes bad and getting worse faster

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — Earth’s warming weather and rising seas are getting worse and doing so faster than before, the World Meteorological Organization warned Sunday in a somber note as world leaders started gathering for international climate negotiations.

“The latest State of the Global Climate report is a chronicle of climate chaos,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. “We must answer the planet’s distress signal with action -- ambitious, credible climate action.”

Egypt Counts On COP27 To Push Developed Countries To Meet Climate Financial Commitments

CAIRO, Nov 5 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt is counting on the upcoming 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), to obligate developed countries to honour their commitments, to finance climate change projects and mitigate the effects of harmful climate changes, a COP official said, yesterday.

To tackle climate challenges, some 120 world leaders will gather in Egypt’s coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh from tomorrow to Nov 18, for the COP27.

Egypt political prisoner dies after hunger strike in prison

02 Nov 2022; MEMO: A 47-year-old man has died in prison in Egypt after starting a hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention, according to the Egyptian Network for Human Rights.

Alaa Al-Salami's family were only informed that he had died three days after he passed away.

Al-Salami was sentenced to life imprisonment on 30 April 2019 by the Cairo Criminal Court and detained first in the maximum-security Scorpion Prison and then transferred to Badr 3 Prison.

Egypt arrests deputy editor of Radio and Television Magazine from her home in Cairo

02 Nov 2022; MEMO: Egyptian security forces have arrested the deputy editor of the state-run Radio and Television Magazine from her home in Cairo.

Prominent human rights lawyer Manal Ajrama had written posts criticising Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, reports Al-Quds.

According to local press report, Manal is 61 and is a carer for her elderly parents. She also suffers from the after effects of spinal surgery.

Egypt arrests Indian climate activist ahead of COP27

01 Nov 2022; MEMO: Egyptian authorities arrested Indian climate activist Ajit Rajagopol who walked from Cairo to Sharm El-Sheikh as part of the March for our Planet global campaign, and then released him 24 hours later.

Rajagopol came to Egypt to participate in the COP27 UN summit hosted this year in Egypt's Red Sea resort town but was arrested at a security checkpoint.
