ADB announces USD 20 bln virus rescue package

Manila, Apr 13 (AFP/PTI) The Asian Development Bank said Monday it will roll out a massive USD 20 billion package to help developing member nations weather the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The fund represents the tripling of a package announced just a month ago, which the ADB decided to boost as the scale of the contagion's impact has mushroomed.

India: Shifting prisoners could spread COVID-19

Bhopal, Apr 13 (PTI) Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath has expressed concern over shifting of some NSA detainees from one district to another despite the lockdown, as some of them later tested positive for coronavirus.

Nath expressed apprehension this could spread the viral disease in other districts.

India: BJP member among 43 booked for violating lockdown norms

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Apr 13 (PTI) Forty-three people, including a BJP member, have been booked for allegedly violating lockdown norms in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav said the FIRs were lodged and copies of it were delivered to the residences, and also put up outside the houses of the people, which included BJP member Vipul Tyagi.

India: Police officer tests positive for COVID-19 in Ludhiana

Ludhiana (Punjab), Apr 13 (PTI) An assistant commissioner of police tested positive for novel coronavirus in Ludhiana in Punjab, a health official said on Monday.

Ludhiana Civil Surgeon Rajesh Bagga said the test reports of the officer, confirming him to be positive for the virus, came on Sunday night.

The ACP (North) was admitted to a local hospital, Bagga said, adding that the health teams were identifying his contacts.

Questions over Nigeria virus measures as lockdown period ends

ABUJA, April 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to stay at home to stop the spread of the coronavirus, but the government has still not said whether it will extend a two-week confinement order on three states that ends Monday (April 13).

Residents in Lagos, Ogun and the capital Abuja have been confined to their homes, only allowed to leave for shopping trips, since March 31 in a measure to halt virus infections.

Italy reports lowest virus death toll in over three weeks

ROME, April 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Italy reported its lowest coronavirus death toll in more than three weeks, confirming trends showing that the COVID-19 outbreak in Europe’s worst-hit nation had peaked.

The 431 new deaths reported by the civil protection service were the lowest since March 19. Italy’s death total now stands at 19,899, officially second behind the United States.

CARICOM summit convened to analyse corona crisis

BRIDGETOWN, April 13 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has convened a special summit for Wednesday to analyze the crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting was convened by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, current president of the regional mechanism, which groups 15 countries in the region.

The main goal of the event is to exchange ideas and experiences on the ‘impact of the deadly virus,’ said the president.

Cuban medical brigade leaves for Togo to assist in virus crisis

HAVANA, Apr 13 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — A Cuban medical brigade left for Togo, in West Africa, to join actions against SARS CoV-2.

This is the first time that Cuban doctors will work in Togo, according to official sources.

Angola was the first country on the continent to receive Cuban doctors with enthusiasm and hope, on April 9.

Other specialists from the Henry Reeve International Contingent are fighting Covid-19 in 18 countries such as Italy, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Belize.
