India: Punjab Assembly moves resolution against CAA

Chandigarh, Jan 17 (PTI) The ruling Congress moved a resolution in the state Assembly here on Friday demanding that the Central government scrap the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.

State Minister Brahm Mohindra moved the resolution against the CAA on the second day of the two-day special session.

India: Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekar Azad visits Jama Masjid

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) Hours after being released from Tihar Jail, Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekar Azad visited the historic Jama Masjid on Friday where he stayed for close to 40 minutes.

Swarmed by his supporters and locals, Azad, with his trademark blue 'safaa', read out the Preamble to the Constitution.

India: Nirbhaya rape and murder: President rejects mercy plea of Mukesh Singh

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh Singh, one of the four men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, sources said.

The rejection came soon after the Union Home Ministry forwarded the petition to the president on Friday morning.

"It's a very good thing. Our hopes have gone up after the disheartening news that the execution might be delayed," the young woman's father told PTI as news came in of the rejection.

During Bezos visit, India minister says Amazon's $1 billion investment is no big favour

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O) hasn’t done India any big favours by announcing a new $1 billion investment, its trade minister said on Thursday, laying bare tensions with the U.S. online retail giant during a visit to the country by its CEO Jeff Bezos.

Amazon and Walmart’s (WMT.N) Flipkart are facing mounting criticism from India’s brick-and-mortar retailers, which accuse the U.S. giants of violating Indian law by racking up billions of dollars of losses to fund deep discounts and discriminating against small sellers. The companies deny the allegations.

Iran FM: Soleimani assassination to mark end of US presence in region

New Delhi, Jan 15, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday that assassination of Lieutenant General Soleimani will mark beginning of the end of the US presence in the region.

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV on Wednesday, he added that in 430 Indian cities, there were mourning processions, demonstrations against this action. The anger, the rage of the people of the region is something "we hope" will not lead to non-political consequences. There will surely be political consequences.

India: Exports dip 1.8 pc in Dec 2019

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) The country's exports contracted for the fifth month in a row by 1.8 per cent in December 2019 to USD 27.36 billion, according to data released by the commerce ministry on Wednesday.

Imports too declined by 8.83 per cent USD 38.61 billion, bringing down the trade deficit to USD 11.25 billion during the month under review.

The trade deficit during December 2018 was USD 14.49 billion.

India: Budget Session of Parliament to commence on Jan 31

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) The Budget Session of Parliament will commence on January 31 and subject to the exigencies of government business, is likely to conclude on April 3 with a recess in between, an official communication said on Wednesday.

President Ram Nath Kovind will address a joint sitting of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in the central hall of Parliament at 11 am on January 31.

India has not closed doors on RCEP: Jaishankar

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) India has not closed its doors on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and will carry out a cost benefit analysis to evaluate its merit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday.

In his address at the Raisina Dialogue, Jaishankar said India pulled out of the RCEP as the offer made by countries of the bloc did not match India's expectations.

"Where RCEP is concerned, we have to look at cost and benefit. We will evaluate RCEP on its economic and trade merit. We have not closed our mind to it," he said.

India: Constant rains restraining movement on roads

Kanpur: It has been raining since Wednesday night. It is still not stopped. The movement on the roads is sparse, owing to the incessant rain on Thursday. 

Though the students up to class VIII stayed at, the senior students faced the brunt of the rain. The students who are appearing at the pre-Board exams braved to reach their respective schools anyhow.

Russian Foreign Minister calls on Indian PM Modi

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) The year 2020 should be the year of implementation of the bilateral decisions taken by India and Russia last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday.

Modi made these remarks when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on him, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

During their interaction, Lavrov briefed the Prime Minister on his country's position on key international and regional issues.

Lavrov is in Delhi to participate in the 'Raisina Dialogue'.
