India: Minor raped, gagged to death in Haryana's Mewat

Chandigarh, Dec 28 (PTI) A minor girl was raped and gagged to death in Ferozepur Jhirka of Haryana's Mewat district, police said.

The eight-year-old victim along with two other girls had gone out to graze goats on Thursday, police said adding that as one of her goats went missing, she went in search for it but did not return home.

Her family members found her body in a forest area on Friday, police said adding that the victim's body was found in a pool of blood.

India: Seelampur violence: Court directs authorities to furnish medical reports of 2 accused

New Delhi, Dec 27 (PTI) A Delhi court on Friday directed the Mandoli Jail authorities to furnish medical reports of two of the fourteen accused arrested in connection with violent protests against the amended Citizenship Act in Seelampur area here.

Additional District Judge Brijesh Garg, who was hearing the bail plea of accused Yusuf Ali on medical grounds, asked the investigating officer (IO) to file his medical report by December 30 after procuring it from authorities of the Mandoli prison where he is lodged along with other accused.

India: Inflation leaves consumers teary-eyed as pricey onions, food items bite

New Delhi, Dec 27 (PTI) Onion literally brought tears to the eyes of consumers as retail prices touched Rs 200 per kilogram and tomato too turned pricier in the last quarter of 2019, leaving many scurrying for changes in dietary ways as costly food items pushed retail inflation to a more than three-year high.

Though well below the price jump seen for the humble 'daily consumable bulb' and tomato, potato also become costlier as crop damages and disruptions stoked supply crunch.

New Delhi, Dec 27 (PTI) Addressing traffic congestion would be a focus area of the AAP government in next five years if it is reelected, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday.

Kejriwal, addressing people in a town-hall meeting in Pitampura, said the AAP manifesto will be released around mid-January and it will consist of all issues that would be addressed in the next five years.

Karna minister warns of confiscation of properties of protesters damanging public assets like in UP

Bengaluru, Dec 26 (PTI) Sending out a stern warning, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka on Thursday said the state government would emulate Uttar Pradesh and confiscate properties of those who caused damage to public properties during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Everyone has to obey the law of the land and not give an opportunity for such an action by the government, he told reporters here.

India: Protest marches against CAA continue in Kerala

Kozhikode/Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26 (PTI): Hundreds of students, women, youth and folk artistes on Thursday took out separate protest marches in Kozhikode against the amended Citizenship Act.

Women activists, belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), also marched against the CAA holding aloft banners stating "stop murder of democracy" and also sat in front of Akashvani here in protest.

In another march, theatre artistes, mime and folk artistes took out a massive procession from the Mananchira Grounds in the port city.

Kashmir: 18 shops in Doda gutted in mysterious fire

Bhaderwah/Jammu, Dec 26 (PTI) A total of 18 shops were gutted in a mysterious fire in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, officials said on Thursday.

A fire broke out in a shop and spread to other shops in Gandoh belt of district last night, they said.

The fire was brought under control, but 18 shops were gutted in the fire, they said.

People of the area demanded a probe into incident.

India: Journalists slam attacks on media during CAA protests

Mumbai, Dec 26 (PTI) Journalists' organisations here on Thursday staged a demonstration against attacks on media persons during the coverage of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and the high-handed behaviour of police.

They also slammed the government's tendency to suspend of Internet during such agitations, and the recent advisories to news channels which warned against "anti-national attitudes".

India: Trade unions call for nationwide strike on Jan 8

Dhanbad (Jharkhand), Dec 26 (PTI) A front of national trade unions on Thursday called for a countrywide strike on January 8 in protest against "anti-labour" and "anti-industry" policies of the BJP-led central government, a trade union leader said.

A K Jha, general secretary of the Rashtriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh (RCMS), a constituent unit of the INTUC, said the decision was taken at a meeting of recognised central trade unions here.

India: TMC to give Rs 5 lakh each to kin of persons killed in Mangaluru anti-CAA protests

Kolkata, Dec 26 (PTI) The Trinamool Congress will give a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to families of the two persons killed in Karnataka's Mangaluru during protests against the amended Citizenship Act.

The state president of the TMC's trade union wing Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), Dola Sen said cheques of Rs 5 lakh each will be handed over to the kin of the deceased during a proposed visit by a TMC delegation to Mangaluru.
