11 Killed In Two Fire Mishaps In India

NEW DELHI, Oct 6 (NNN-PTI) – At least 11 persons died and around 40 were injured, in two separate fire incidents in India today, local media reported.

A massive fire broke out inside a multi-storey building, in the Goregaon area of financial capital, Mumbai, in the south-western Maharashtra state, killing seven persons and injuring nearly 40.

Five among the injured were said to be in critical condition, while four persons were discharged from the hospital after first aid.

4 missing after boat capsizes off coast in south India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least four fishermen went missing, and three others were rescued after their boat capsized off the coast in India's southern state of Kerala, officials said Friday.

The boat capsized Thursday midnight about 11 nautical miles north off Munambam harbor in Kochi district.

Following the boat capsize, the Coast Guard and the Kerala Fisheries Department launched a search and rescue operation for the four missing fishermen.

India: Icy flood that killed at least 41 in India’s northeast was feared for years

NEW DELHI (AP) — Hundreds of rescuers dug through slushy debris and fast-flowing, icy water Friday in a search for survivors after a glacial lake overflowed and burst through a dam in India’s Himalayan north, a disaster that many had warned was possible for years.

The flood began in the early hours of Wednesday, when water overflowed a mountain lake. It smashed through a major hydroelectric dam downstream and then poured into the valley below, where it killed at least 41 people, carrying bodies kilometers (miles) away, and forced thousands to flee their homes.

Road Mishap Killed Eight In North India

NEW DELHI, Oct 5 (NNN-PTI) – As many as eight people, including four members of a family, died, and a couple of others were injured, in a road accident in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, yesterday, confirmed the local police.

The mishap occurred in the Phulpur area of the state, on the Varanasi-Lucknow highway, when a passenger’s vehicle collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction.

One nine-year-old boy, who was severely injured in the accident was admitted to a local hospital. He was said to be in a critical condition.

Flash floods kill at least 14 in northeastern India and leave more than 100 missing

NEW DELHI (AP) — Rescue workers were searching for more than 100 people on Thursday after flash floods triggered by a sudden heavy rainfall swamped several towns in northeastern India, killing at least 14 people, officials said.

More than 2,000 people were rescued after Wednesday’s floods, the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority said in a statement, adding that state authorities set up 26 relief camps for more than 22,000 people impacted by the floods.

India: Situation in Manipur from bad to worse, Cong slams PM Modi

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Manipur, and alleged that never before has a PM completely "abandoned" a state and its entire people like now.

Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said that Manipur coming to such a situation after the BJP was elected to power there 15 months ago is a "most damning indictment of its policies and the prime minister's priorities".

India: ED raids on Sanjay Singh show BJP resorting to desperate measures: CM Kejriwal

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the ED raids on AAP leader Sanjay Singh's residence showed that the BJP was resorting to desperate measures as it stares at a defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Many such raids will take place but there is nothing to be scared of, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener said.

India: Flash flood in Sikkim; 23 army personnel missing

Gangtok, Oct 4 (PTI) A sudden cloud burst over Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim has resulted in a flash flood in the Teesta River in Lachen valley on Wednesday, which was compounded by the release of water from a dam, leading to 23 army personnel being washed away, camps and vehicles being submerged, officials said.

The floods started around 1.30 am, they said.

Defence officials said establishments along the valley have been affected and efforts are on to confirm details.

Eight Dead, Many Injured In South India Road Accident

NEW DELHI, Oct 2 (NNN-PTI) – At least eight persons were killed and many others injured, after a bus carrying nearly 60 passengers fell into a deep gorge, in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu, local police said yesterday.

The mishap occurred in the state’s Nilgiris district, late on Saturday night, when the bus lost control, while navigating the hairpin bend roads, a local policeman confirmed.
