Iraq redeploys military forces in Kirkuk

BAGHDAD; 03 Feb 2019; AA: Iraqi military forces on Sunday were redeployed in the northern Kirkuk province, according to an army officer.

"The redeployment came shortly after the forces arrived in the area," the officer told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"The new military units will replace the anti-terrorism forces ahead of their withdrawal," he said.

Kurdish protesters storm Turkish military base in Iraq

U.S. Secretary of State in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi leaders

BAGHDAD, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Baghdad on a surprise visit to meet with Iraqi leaders to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation, an Iraqi official television reported on Wednesday.

Pompeo met with the Iraqi Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi and is expected to meet with the Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and other top officials, the state-run Iraqiya channel said.

Special flight evacuating 30 Russian children from Iraq lands in Moscow

ZHUKOVSKY, December 30. /TASS/. A special flight from Baghdad that evacuated Russian children whose parents joined terrorist organizations in the Middle East has landed at the Ramenskoye airdrome outside Moscow, a TASS correspondent reported from the site.

Head of Russia’s North Caucasian region of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram account earlier that the plane was carrying 30 children who had been kept at Iraqi prisons with their mothers. According to Kadyrov, 24 of them are from Dagestan, 3 from Chechnya, and the rest from Moscow and Penza.

Newly-elected Iraqi president tasks Adel Abdul-Mahdi to form next gov't

BAGHDAD, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The newly-elected Iraqi President Barham Salih on Tuesday named the Shiite independent politician Adel Abdul-Mahdi as prime minister-designate and tasked him with forming the next government, Iraq official television reported.

The state-run Iraqiya channel aired a footage showing that Salih received Mahdi with the presence of the parliament speaker, head of the judicial council and many officials and politicians and officially tasked Mahdi as the prime minister-designate to form the new government.

Iraq regrets U.S. decision to close consulate in Basra

BAGHDAD, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Saturday regretted that United States has decided to pull out its diplomats from Iraq's southern city of Basra and warned U.S. citizens against travelling to the country.

The Iraqi government "confirms that Iraq is committed to protecting foreign diplomatic missions on its territory and securing them," the ministry said in a statement.

"Their security is part of the security of Iraq, and a legal and moral obligation," it added.

Protesters burn Iranian consulate in Iraq's Basra

BAGHDAD, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of demonstrators stormed the Iranian consulate in Iraq's southern city of Basra on Friday, setting fire to the building, a security source said.

The Iranian employees had withdrawn from the building to safe places before the attack, the source said on condition of anonymity.
