India: Kerala reports first COVID-19 death

Kochi, Mar 28 (PTI) Kerala reported its first COVID-19 death on Saturday after a 69-year-old man being treated for the virus died at Ernakulam Medical College Hospital.

The man, hailing from Ernakulam, was admitted to the isolation ward on March 22 after his return from Dubai, the government hospital said in a statement.

India: Stickers to be pasted on walls of house in Kerala of those under quarantine

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 27 (PTI): In a new initiative to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, stickers will be pasted on the walls of the homes of those under home quarantine in Thiruvananthapuram from Friday.

State Minister Kadakampally Surendran said marking of the houses will help the health workers properly monitor those under quarantine,

India: West Bengal man flees from isolation ward in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 25 (PTI) A man from West Bengal, who was under observation at an isolation ward for suspected coronavirus infection, fled from the general hospital here on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police have launched a massive manhunt to trace the man, believed to be in his thirties.

Messages have been sent to all police stations about the incident.

India: Killer IAS officer reinstated in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 23 (PTI) The Kerala government has reinstated suspended IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman, who was accused of driving a car in an inebriated condition and fatally knocking down a journalist here on August 3 last year.

Venkitaraman has been appointed Joint secretary in the health department.

India: Alleged rapist Bishop Mulakkal's discharge plea dismissed by trial court

Kottayam (Ker),Mar 16 (PTI) A trial court here on Monday dismissed a discharge petition filed by Bishop Franco Mulakkal, in connection with the case of alleged rape of a nun in which he is the prime accused.

In his plea filed before the Additional District and Sessions Court I, Mulakkal had claimed that prima facie there was no case to frame charges against him.

India: Kerala govt puts 45 Italy returnees under observation

Kochi, Mar 11 (PTI) Stepping up efforts to check the spread of coronavirus in Kerala, the state government has sent at least 45 people who returned here from COVID-19 hit Italy to various health facilities, official sources said on Wednesday.

While 35 people including two children and two pregnant womenhave been shifted to a Government district hospital in Aluva, 10 suffering from fever and breathing problems have been admitted to the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, they said.

Authorities In India’s Kerala Sound Alert, As Bird-Flu Hits Poultry Farms

NEW DELHI, Mar 8 (NNN-PTI) – Authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala, on Saturday, sounded an alert, after it was found that bird-flu has hit poultry farms in one of the districts.

The bird flu virus was confirmed in poultry farms in Kozhikode district, about 400 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala.

“The influenza was found to have spread in a farm at Vengara and Kodiyathur,” an official at Kozhikode collectorate said. “Several birds have died in the farms but the flu has not so far affected humans.”

Thrissur (Ker), Mar 6 (PTI) A local temple in Kerala has become the eye of a social media storm after the picture of a 'Brahmins-only toilet' outside its main campus went viral on online platforms, prompting the management to remove the signboard.

The picture of three toilets, with signboards showing 'Men', 'Women' and 'Brahmins', at the Kuttumukku Mahadeva Temple here, has gone viral with many netizens viewing it as an unethical practise which would put the progressive state in a bad light.

India: Scribe's widow given govt job

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 4 (PTI): The Kerala government on Wednesday issued order appointing widow of a senior journalist, who was killed after being hit by a car driven by IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman, at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam university in Tirur.

Jaseela, 32, a commerce graduate, would be posted as an assistant at the universty, the order stated.
