India: Lockdown lifted in Thiruvananthapuram city limits

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 14 (PTI): The over a month-long COVID-19 induced lockdown in Thiruvananthapuram corporation limits will be lifted from midnight following which malls, hypermarkets and salons will open Saturday morning.

The order will be effective only in non-containment zones, a circular from the District Collector, Dr Navjot Khosa said.

Lockdown was imposed in the corporation limits on July 5.

India: Death toll in Kerala landslip goes up to 55

Idukki, Aug 12 (PTI) The death toll in the landslide at Pettimudi near Munnar in the high-range Idukki district has gone up to 55 with three more bodies being recovered from the debris on Wednesday, officials said.

Operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are continuing in the area even on the sixth day today to trace 15 more missing people.

"Till now, we have recovered 55 bodies.Earlier we rescued 12 people.Now 15 people are missing.

Air India Express plane crash: condition of eight injured critical

Malappuram, Aug 10 (PTI) The condition of eight, out of the 101 passengers, who were injured in the Air India Express plane crash at Karipur airport here, remains critical, officials said.

A total of 71 have been discharged till now, after being treated at various hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode.

Death toll in Air India Express flight crash rises to 18

Kozhikode(Ker),Aug 8 (PTI) The death toll in the Air India Express flight crash at the airport here, rose to 18 on Saturday with one more passenger succumbing to injuries.

Malappuram District Collector K Gopalakrishnan told reporters here that one more passenger had succumbed to injuries.

India: Bishop Franco Mulakkal granted bail

Kottayam (Ker), Aug 7 (PTI) A trial court here on Friday granted bail to Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun in Kerala, with stringent conditions and directed him to be present on the dates of hearing of the case.

The Additional Sessions Court had cancelled the bail granted to the Bishop on July 13 for failing to appear for the trial and issued a Non Bailable Warrant against him.

Mulakkal was present in the Court on Friday when it considered the matter.

India: Prisoners to work at three fuel outlets in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 31 (PTI): In a new initiative, jail inmates in Kerala will man three fuel outlets which have come up adjacent to three prisons in the state.

The scheme, jointly launchedby Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the Jail department at the Thiruvananthapuram and Viyyur central jails and Chemeni open prison, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinaryi Vijayan through video conferencing on Thursday.

One more outlet will come up at the Kannur central prison.

India: Complete lockdown not a solution, says Kerala Govt

Thiruvananthapuram, July 27 (PTI) The Kerala government on Monday said a complete lockdown was not a solution to halt the spread of coronavirus but containment measures in affected areas will be further strengthened as the state's infection tally touched 19,727 with 702 fresh cases.

A special cabinet meeting held on Monday decided not to go in for a total lockdown in the state, a line suggested at the all-party meeting last week, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

India: Film producer accused of sexual assault

Kochi, July 19 (PTI): A case has been registered against a Malayalam film producer for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, police said on Sunday.

Alwyn Antony had sexually abused the 22-year-old woman last year after promising her roles in his movies, the police said.

The accused is absconding, they said.

India: Kerala HC directs cops to ensure protection to nun

Kochi, Jul 11 (PTI) The Kerala High Court has directed the police to provide adequate protection, if necessary, to the life and property of a nun who alleged that she was facing threat from the authorities of her convent and some priests of her diocese.

Considering a plea filed by sister Lucy Kalappura seeking police protection, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan has also issued notice to authorities of Franciscan Clarist Congregation and two priests of Mananthavady diocese of Syrian Catholic Church.

India: Italian Marines case: Kerala CM writes to PM

Thiruvananthapuram, July 4 (PTI): Kerala on Saturday urged the Centre to make "earnest efforts" to build international pressure to ensure that a fair trial is held against the two Italian marines who shot and killed two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said: "It is quite shocking that such a grave crime committed against our citizens is not being brought to justice in our country.
