Iraq to commence cross-border railway project with Iran

30 August 2023; MEMO: Iraq is to kick-start the much-delayed cross-border railway line connecting it with neighbouring Iran. Citing a government source, the Shafaq News Agency reported today that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani is to visit the southern province of Basra where he will lay the foundation stone for the 36 kilometre railway project.

Iran weightlifter banned for life after shaking hands with Israel athlete

31 August 2023; MEMO: A veteran Iranian weightlifter has been banned for life for shaking hands with an Israeli opponent at the 2023 World Master Weightlifting Championships in Poland after winning a silver medal, Anadolu Agency reports.

Mostafa Rajaei, who is in his early 40s, was seen shaking hands and posing for photographs with Israeli weightlifter, Maksim Svirsky, during the competition after they both had a podium finish.

Iran reveals shut down details of cell affiliated with Israel’s Mossad

31 August 2023; MEMO: The Iranian authorities revealed details of the dismantling of a cell affiliated with Israel’s Mossad spy agency yesterday. The cell is said to have been operating in four provinces. According to the Ministry of Security and Intelligence in Tehran, it included 14 people and was shut down in mid-August.

Israel: court orders Netanyahu’s son to pay $34,000 in defamation case

31 August 2023; MEMO: A court in Israel ordered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair yesterday to pay 130,000 shekels (around $34,000) in compensation for “slander and defamation” in a case lodged against him by Blue and White party activist Dana Kashdi. The order was made by the Magistrates’ Court in Kfar Saba.
