India: Shops, commercial establishments closed in Punjab in view of 'Bharat Bandh' call by farmers

Chandigarh, Dec 8 (PTI) Shops and commercial establishments remained shut at many places in Punjab on Tuesday morning in view of a 'Bharat Bandh' called by agitating farmer unions to protest the Centre's three agri laws.

Petroleum dealers in the state closed filling stations to back the call for the nationwide strike. There are over 3,400 fuel pumps in Punjab.

India: Parkash Singh Badal returns Padma award over farm laws

Chandigarh, Dec 3 (PTI) Akali stalwart and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday returned his Padma Vibhushan award in protest against the Centre's farm laws.

I am who I am because of the people, especially the common farmer. Today when he has lost more than his honour, I see no point in holding on to the Padma Vibhushan honour, the Shiromani Akali Dal leader said.

India: Punjab farmers lift rail blockade for 15 days

Chandigarh, Nov 21 (PTI) In a move that may bring relief to the state facing an acute shortage of essential supplies, Punjab farmer bodies protesting against the Centre's farm laws on Saturday decided to lift their blockade of passenger trains for 15 days from Monday.

However, the farmer bodies said they will again block the rail tracks if the government failed to resolve their issues.

India: Punjab revokes 'general consent' to CBI

Chandigarh, Nov 10 (PTI) The Congress-led government in Punjab has revoked its general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation for probing cases in the state, joining several other non-BJP ruled states that have carried out similar moves.

West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are among the states that have already withdrawn their "general consent" to the CBI.

India: BJP condemns burning of PM's effigies on Dussehra

Chandigarh, Oct 26 (PTI) BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Monday condemned the burning of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's effigies on the occasion of Dussehra in Punjab.

Chugh described it as unfortunate and said such incidents have hurt sentiments of millions of people in the country.

He alleged that effigies of the PM were set on fire at the behest of the Congress-led government in the state and said it showed how the ruling party could stoop to such a level just for the sake of petty politics .

It cannot be tolerated, he said.

India: 15-year-old raped in Punjab's Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur, Oct 26 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl working at a brick kiln in Naru Nangal here was allegedly raped by a youth, police said on Monday.

The incident took place at Manan village on October 24.

The accused, identified as Arun Kumar, has been arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, said Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Neelam Kumari.

The victim lived at labour quarters. The accused lived nearby.

India: Punjab farmers burn effigies of PM Modi, Union govt

Chandigarh, Oct 25 (PTI) Punjab farmers on Sunday burnt effigies of the Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at several places in protest against the farm laws.

The protesters described the three farm legislations introduced by the Centre as black laws and raised slogans against the BJP-led Centre. They demanded that the withdrawal of the laws.

Farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Mod in Amritsar.

India: Punjab CM to meet Guv over farm laws

Chandigarh, Oct 20 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will meet Governor V P Singh Badnore over the Bills against the Centre's farm laws after the conclusion of the special session of the state assembly on Tuesday evening.

The chief minister will apprise the governor about the four Bills and the resolution against the Centre's farm laws.

The Punjab Assembly has unanimously passed the legislations and adopted the resolution.

After the day's proceedings, the chief minister will be meeting the governor, an official spokesperson said.

India: Punjab BJP chief's vehicle attacked by protesting farmers

Chandigarh, Oct 12 (PTI) Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma's vehicle was allegedly attacked by some protesting farmers at the Cholang toll plaza in Hoshiarpur district, police said on Monday evening.

Windowpanes of his car were damaged in this incident, though Sharma was safe, they said.

The incident took place when Sharma was going back to Pathankot from Jalandhar.

India: SAD seeks SC-monitored probe into Hathras incident

Chandigarh, Oct 3 (PTI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday sought a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the Hathras incident in Uttar Pradesh.

Badal, who had recently snapped ties with the BJP-led NDA, accused the Uttar Pradesh government of discriminating against the victim's family by "forcibly conducting" her last rites.
