India: Kejriwal promises free electricity in Punjab if AAP wins

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) Ahead of assembly elections in Punjab next year, Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday promised free electricity in that state if his Aam Aadmi Party wins the polls.

A day ahead of his visit to Chandigarh, the AAP leader also claimed that women in Punjab are very unhappy with inflation.

India: Multi-crore fake Remdesivir racket busted

Chandigarh, Jun 18 (PTI) Punjab police on Friday said that they have busted an interstate gang producing fake Remdesivir injections with the arrest of six persons.

The arrested accused have been identified as as Mohammad Shahwar, Arshad Khan and Mohammad Arshad from Uttar Pradesh; Pradeep Saroha from Haryana; and Shah Nazar and Shah Alam from Mohali in Punjab, they said.

India: Sprint icon Milkha Singh dies of Covid-19

Chandigarh, Jun 18 (PTI) Indian sprint legend Milkha Singh died on Friday after a month-long battle with COVID-19, during which he lost his former national volleyball captain wife Nirmal Kaur to the same ailment.

The Padma Shri awardee was 91 and is survived by his golfer son Jeev Milkha Singh and three daughters.

"He breathed his last at 11.30pm," a family spokesperson told PTI.

India: Minor girl raped in Punjab two arrested

Hoshiarpur, June 12 (PTI) Two persons were arrested on the charge of raping a 14-year-old girl in a Hosiarpur village, police said on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as Kulvir Singh and Gurmukh Singh, said police.

The victim alleged that her neighbour Gurmukh Singh and his friend Kulvir Singh had raped her.

They also threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed it to anyone, the victim told police.

India: SAD, BSP form alliance for 2022 Punjab Assembly polls

Chandigarh, Jun 12 (PTI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) formed an alliance on Saturday for the 2022 Punjab Assembly election.

Announcing the tie-up at a press conference, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal described it as a new day in politics of Punjab .

"Today, is a historic day...a big turn in Punjab's politics, he said in the presence of BSP General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra.

He said the SAD and the BSP will jointly fight the 2022 polls and other elections together.

India: Fake call centre busted in Ambala, 9 booked

Ambala, Jun 9 (PTI) Haryana Police on Wednesday raided an alleged fake call centre being run in a marriage palace building on Ambala-Kaithal Highway near Ambala city and booked nine people in this connection, police said.

Rahul from Gurugram, Kamal (Panchkula), Chintan (Ahmedabad) and six others were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, they said.

India: Farmers burn copies of farm laws in Punjab

Chandigarh, Jun 5 (PTI) Farmers burnt copies of the Centre's three farm laws near residences of BJP leaders and at other places in Punjab on Saturday as they observed 'Sampoorna Kranti Diwas' to mark the day when these legislations were promulgated as ordinances last year.

Farmers carrying black flags raised slogans against the BJP-led central government for not scrapping the legislations which, they said, will "destroy" the farming community.

India: Punjab farmers in large numbers march towards Delhi borders

Chandigarh, May 24 (PTI) Punjab farmers in large numbers are marching towards Delhi borders, said state BKU leaders in the wake of a call given to observe May 26 as a "black day" to mark six months of the agitation against the Centre's farm laws.

Farmers are protesting at the Delhi's Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders since late November, demanding the repeal of the laws, which the Union government claimed is for their benefit.

No talks have been been held over the issue between the Centre and the agitating farmers since January 22.

India: AAP urges PM Modi to resume talks with farmers

Chandigarh, May 22 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accept with humility farmers' invitation of talks over the Centre's agriculture laws and resolve the issue.

In a letter to the PM, AAP MP Bhagwant Mann and the party's Punjab affairs co-incharge Raghav Chadha also claimed that 470 have died during the course of the agitation, which is unfortunate and painful.
