Brazilian judge orders release of ex-billionaire Batista

11 August 2019; AFP: A Brazilian judge ordered the release of ex-billionaire Eike Batista late Saturday after he was detained for violating the terms of his house arrest, local media reported.

Appeals Court judge Simone Schreiber ruled that the detention of the magnate once considered Brazil's richest man "violated the Constitution... and the principle of presumption of innocence."

A Batista attorney cited by the G1 news site said that his client will be released on Sunday morning.

Uruguayan university opens center to foster China-LatAm trade

MONTEVIDEO, Aug 8 (NNN-EFE) — The University of Montevideo’s Business School on Wednesday launched a new China-Latin American Studies Center for Trade and Business that will seek, among other things, to be a “power plant of ideas” to improve relations between Latin America and the Asian giant.

The center’s director, Nicolas Santo, spoke with EFE, saying that although the facility will aim to improve overall relations between Latin American and China, the focus will be on Uruguay “to be able to provide added value to (bilateral) trade and investment links.”

Venezuela denounces detaining of ship carrying food inputs

CARACAS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez on Wednesday denounced the detaining of a ship headed to Venezuela with primary materials for food production.

The ship was stopped at the Panama Canal.

"Venezuela is denouncing to the world that, right now, a ship carrying 25,000 tons of soybean meal for food production in our country is currently being detained in the Panama Canal," Rodriguez said on Twitter.

Brazil's Supreme Court overturns decision to transfer former president to common prison

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a judge's decision to transfer former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from the headquarter of the Federal Police in Curitiba to a common prison in Sao Paulo state.

Lula has been serving his sentence in Curitiba for over a year. The ruling on his transfer was issued Wednesday morning, based on a request from the Federal Police in Curitiba, which alleged difficulties in maintaining Lula at the headquarters, as the site is not appropriate for keeping prisoners for long periods.

Maduro halts talks with opponents over US asset freeze

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Venezuela’s government late Wednesday halted negotiations with the opposition in protest of the Trump administration’s freezing of its U.S. assets, thrusting into crisis the country’s best chance of peacefully resolving a political standoff that has kept the nation on the edge for more than six months.

The decision surprised representatives of opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who were already on the Caribbean island of Barbados awaiting what was to be the start Thursday of the sixth round of talks that began in May under the auspices of Norway.

Uruguay: The new global drug trafficking hub

07 August 2019; DW: Lacking resources and organization, authorities in Uruguay are struggling to combat global drug trafficking. The country has become an increasingly important hub for drug smugglers as a result.

"Uruguay is not looking too good in this matter," Enrique Canon, head of Uruguay's top customs authority, said after the recent discovery of 600 kilograms (1,300 pounds) of cocaine at a French airport. The illicit shipment came from Uruguay.
