Analysts were skeptical that the device presents a major new threat, but the test underlines the North’s commitment to raising nuclear threats.

S. Korea's parliament passes bill for gov't mandatory purchase of excess rice

SEOUL, March 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's parliament on Thursday passed a bill to make the government's purchase of excess rice mandatory.

The revised grain management act was passed at a plenary session of the National Assembly, led by the opposition Democratic Party, with 169 in favor, 90 against, and seven abstentions out of 266 lawmakers present.

Under the revised act, the government is obligated to purchase all overproduced rice when the excess production is 3-5 percent higher than rice demand or when the rice prices fall 5-8 percent compared to the previous year.

S. Korean Private Space Company Successfully Flies Test Launch Vehicle

SEOUL, Mar 21 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korean private space company, Innospace, has successfully flown a test launch vehicle, marking the first of its kind by the country’s private sector, local media reported today.

Hanbit-TLV, the suborbital test launch vehicle, independently developed by the space startup, was launched from the Alcantara Space Centre in northern Brazil, at 2:52 p.m. local time (1752 GMT) on Sunday.

The missiles launched from the southwestern coastal town of Jangyon flew across North Korea before landing in the sea off that country’s east coast, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It said both missiles traveled about 620 kilometers (385 miles).

SEOUL, March 13 (Reuters) - Nuclear-armed North Korea test-fired two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine on Sunday, state news agency KCNA said on Monday, just as U.S.-South Korea military drills were due to begin.

"Strategic" is typically used to describe weapons that have a nuclear capability.

KCNA said the launch confirmed the reliability of the system and tested the underwater offensive operations of the submarine units that form part of North Korea's nuclear deterrent.
