South Sudan union says journalists detained over viral video

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — A journalists’ union in South Sudan asserted Friday that six staffers with the national broadcaster are detained in connection with footage apparently showing the country’s president urinating on himself during an event.

The South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation footage aired in December and was widely shared online. It showed 71-year-old President Salva Kiir standing during the national anthem and then looking down at what appeared to be a spreading stain before the camera turned away.

At least 166 killed in South Sudan violence in 4 months: UN

Juba, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 166 civilians have been killed and 237 others injured in the last four months in clashes in South Sudan's Upper Nile State, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said on Wednesday.

"These killings, along with reports of gender-based violence, abductions, destruction of property and looting, are severe human rights violations and abuses and must stop," Turk said in a statement.

UNHCR appeals for global support for South Sudan amid historic floods

JUBA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, on Friday urged international support for humanitarian efforts in South Sudan in the wake of historic floods that for four years in a row have left nearly one million people in desperate need of assistance.

Raouf Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations said the world should intensify support to provide South Sudan with climate-adapted development assistance to help it move away from dependency on humanitarian aid.

JUBA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan should focus on ending intermittent communal violence at local levels in order to achieve steady peace progress during the recently extended transition period, a United Nations official said on Monday.

Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the Deputy Special Representative in the UN Mission (UNMISS) and Resident Coordinator in South Sudan, called on all parties to the 2018 revitalized peace deal to accomplish the pending critical tasks before the end of the transition period in February 2025.

South Sudan dismisses report of graft involving $1bn credit line for vulnerable communities

17 October 2022; MEMO: A top official in South Sudan, on Monday, denied a recent report that corruption had deprived vulnerable communities of food, fuel, and medicine to be acquired through a $1 billion credit line, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Information Minister, Michael Makuei Lueth, said the accusations in the report, published by US-based advocacy group, The Sentry, were biased.
