South Sudan’s Peace Monitors Approved Transitional Government’s Extension

JUBA, Sept 2 (NNN-SUNA) – South Sudan’s peace monitors, yesterday, unanimously voted to extend the Transitional Government by two years.

Charles Tai Gituai, the interim chairperson of the Revitalised Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), said, two-thirds of the voting members in the commission, approved the extension, according to the procedures set out in the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

Chinese medics boost capacity of South Sudanese peers to treat heart ailments

JUBA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Sixty South Sudanese students at the Juba Teaching Hospital College of Nursing and Midwifery are receiving specialized training by members of the ninth batch of the Chinese medical team dispatched to the world's youngest nation.

With the training, which will end Friday, the students of nursing and midwifery are adequately prepared to treat heart-related complications after acquiring skills and expertise from Chinese medics.

Hakim Martin, a 25-year-old student of midwifery, says that he is grateful to have acquired the skills.

South Sudan secures 120 mln USD from World Bank for infrastructure growth

JUBA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan said Thursday it has secured 120 million U. S. dollars from the World Bank through its development arm International Development Association for infrastructure development.

Agak Achuil Lual, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning said the funds would also be used to strengthen community institutions, and enhance food resilience in the east African country.

UN says 440 civilians killed in South Sudan clashes

JUBA, March 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 440 civilians died in fighting between warring groups in southwestern South Sudan between June and September last year, the United Nations said.

   “Grave human rights violations and abuses, including hundreds of killings, were committed against civilians during fighting in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State,” according to a joint report by the United Nations Mission
in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Human Rights Office.

OLD FANGAK, South Sudan (AP) — Nyayiar Kuol cradled her severely malnourished 1-year-old daughter as they traveled for 16 hours on a crowded barge to the nearest hospital to their home in rural South Sudan. For months she had been feeding her four children just once a day, unable to cultivate because of disastrous flooding and without enough food assistance from the government or aid groups. She worries her daughter might die.

“I don’t want to think about what could happen,” she said.

Floods cut off communities in South Sudan's Unity state

JUBA, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Severe flooding has hit South Sudan's northern state of Unity, cutting off communities from accessing supplies of food and other vital commodities, a state official said on Friday.

More than 700,000 people have been affected by the worst flooding in the country for nearly 60 years, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said in October, blaming climate change. 

South Sudan, WHO step up preparedness amid Ebola outbreak in neighboring DR Congo

JUBA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan and the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday they have stepped up Ebola virus disease (EVD) preparedness and response readiness in the high-risk counties of Morobo and Yei River, Central Equatoria state.

Fabian Ndenzako, WHO Representative for South Sudan said the UN agency has started developing a response plan and mobilizing resources to ensure that required preparedness and readiness priority activities are implemented.

UN seeks more funds for floods response in South Sudan

JUBA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations relief agency said on Friday it is seeking additional funding to ramp up humanitarian response in South Sudan where flooding continues to impact people across the country.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said the UN relief agency has allocated 20 million U.S. dollars from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund, with part of the allocation supporting flood response efforts, complementing bilateral funding sources.

In South Sudan, flooding called ‘worst thing in my lifetime’

MALUALKON, South Sudan (AP) — He feels like a man who has drowned.

The worst flooding that parts of South Sudan have seen in 60 years now surrounds his home of mud and grass. His field of sorghum, which fed his family, is under water. Surrounding mud dykes have collapsed.

Other people have fled. Only Yel Aguer Deng’s family and a few neighbors remain.
