Philippines storm Megi: 214 killed and 132 missing

BANGKOK, April 29. /TASS/: More than 2.29 million people have been affected by tropical storm Megi in the Philippines. A total of 214 people died, according to the updates report of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), which was released on Friday.

According to NDRRMC, more than 69,700 displaced people are still staying at 200 evacuation centers. As many as 33,500 people were evacuated beforehand. A total of 132 people are reported missing.

Thailand: ADB, Energy Absolute ink 160 mil baht loan to finance electric ferry fleet in Bangkok

BANGKOK, April 27 (NNN-Bernama) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Energy Absolute Public Company Ltd. (Energy Absolute) had inked a 160 million baht loan agreement to finance an electric ferry fleet for mass rapid transport in Bangkok, Thailand. 

Myanmar court sentences Suu Kyi to 5 years for corruption

BANGKOK (AP) — A court in military-ruled Myanmar convicted the country’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi of corruption and sentenced her to five years in prison Wednesday in the first of several corruption cases against her.

Suu Kyi, who was ousted by an army takeover last year, had denied the allegation that she had accepted gold and hundreds of thousands of dollars given her as a bribe by a top political colleague.

Thailand ends mandatory quarantine for vaccinated visitors

BANGKOK (AP) — Visitors to Thailand who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus will no longer need to undergo any test or quarantine on arrival starting May 1, a measure the authorities hope will help rejuvenate the country’s lucrative tourism industry.

“Many countries have already eased their restrictions,” Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Friday. “We are a country that relies on the tourism industry, especially during these times. This will help move the economy forward.”

Thai government says Ramadan bombings won't derail peace talks with rebels

BANGKOK, April 17 (Reuters) - Ramadan bombings in Thailand's Muslim-majority deep south will not derail peace talks with separatist rebels, the government said on Sunday after a sidelined insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Two explosions on Friday, which killed a civilian and injured three policemen, were carried out by "G5", a militant group of the Patani United Liberation Organisation (PULO), its president, Kasturi Mahkota, told Reuters. 

World shares mostly higher as China looks to boost economy

BANGKOK (AP) — World shares were mostly higher Thursday after China indicated its central bank will ease reserve requirements for lenders to counter the blow to its economy from pandemic shutdowns in big cities like Shanghai.

London slipped while Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Shanghai gained. U.S. futures were mixed and oil prices fell.

Trading was relatively quiet with some Asian markets closed for holidays. Markets in the U.S. and Europe face a shortened week and will be closed on Friday for Good Friday holidays.

Foreign businesses question Myanmar foreign currency rules

BANGKOK (AP) — Foreign business groups in Myanmar have raised concerns about new rules requiring businesses and individuals to convert all foreign currency held in bank accounts into the local currency.

A statement issued Friday by the American Chamber of Commerce and British, French, Australian chambers and similar groups says the rules would lower Myanmar standards of living, stop foreign business activity and foreign investment and cause trade tensions.

Despite risk of death, Thailand sends Myanmar refugees back

Jakarta, Apr 7 (AP) The young woman from Myanmar and her family now live amid the tall grasses of a riverbank on the Thai border, trapped between a country that does not want them and a country whose military could kill them.

Like thousands of others fleeing mounting violence after a military takeover in Myanmar last February, Hay left her village for neighbouring Thailand in search of a safe haven that does not exist. Returning to Myanmar would place her and her family at risk of death.

Chinese hackers reportedly target India’s power grid

BANGKOK (AP) — India’s power sector has been targeted by hackers in a long-term operation thought to have been carried out by a state-sponsored Chinese group, a U.S.-based private cybersecurity company detailed in a new report.

Over the last several months, the Insikt Group, the threat research division of Massachusetts-based Recorded Future, said it has collected evidence that hackers targeted seven Indian state centers responsible for carrying out electrical dispatch and grid control near a border area disputed by the two nuclear neighbors.
