HANOI (AP) — President Joe Biden said Sunday his visit to Vietnam to showcase stronger ties with Hanoi was not about trying to start a “cold war” with China, but rather was part of a broader effort to provide global stability by building U.S. relationships throughout Asia at a time of tensions with Beijing.

“It’s not about containing China,” Biden said at a news conference in Vietnam’s capital after attending the Group of 20 summit in India. “It’s about having a stable base.”

HANOI, Aug 4 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnam will consider a direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) mechanism, between renewable power generators and large electricity users, without going through its state utility EVN, local media reported today.

If approved, the buying and selling of electricity would be conducted through a private transmission line invested by the private sector, local newspaper Vietnam News reported, citing the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

HANOI, July 20 (NNN-Bernama) — Vietnam rolled out the red carpet for Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the official welcoming ceremony in the Presidential Palace here Thursday.

Anwar was received on arrival at the Presidential Palace by his counterpart Pham Minh Chinh.

The national anthem of Malaysia, Negaraku and Vietnam’s national anthem Tien Quan Ca were then played by the military band before Anwar accompanied by Chinh inspected the Guard of Honour.

HANOI, June 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will stop at Central Vietnam's port city of Danang on Sunday in a rare visit for a U.S. warship to the southeast Asian nation, as tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea remain high.

The ship will arrive on Sunday afternoon and stay at Danang until June 30, local media reported the spokesperson for Vietnam's foreign affairs ministry as saying. The spokesperson did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

HANOI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's seafood exports were revised down by 10 percent to 9 billion U.S. dollars for this year due to weakening demand from key markets, Vietnam News reported on Tuesday.

It is highly likely that the seafood industry would fail to reach the official export target of 10 billion dollars for 2023, said Truong Dinh Hoe, general secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

HANOI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh on Sunday, discussing enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations, Vietnam News Agency reported.

During the meeting, Albanese, who paid a two-day official visit to Vietnam, announced a package of 105 million Australian dollars (69.5 million U.S. dollars) to aid Vietnam in combating climate change.

HANOI, May 30 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports rose 29 percent to 1.9 billion U.S. dollars, in the first five months from a year ago, mainly due to expanded exports of durian, dragon fruit and banana, VnExpress reported, yesterday.

China remained the biggest market for Vietnamese fruit and vegetables, in the Jan-May period with 805 million U.S. dollars worth of shipments, according to the Vietnam Fruit & Vegetable Association.

HANOI, May 30 (Reuters) - Samsung and other foreign companies are pushing Vietnam to introduce a multi-million-dollar reform that would compensate them for higher levies they face from next year under a global overhaul of tax rules, a source involved in the talks said.

The discussions precede the introduction from January of a minimum tax rate of 15% for large multinationals under a landmark global reform led by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

HANOI, May 24 (NNN-VNA) – Vietnam is ranked among 15 countries, with the largest number of male smokers, mainly due to easy access to cigarettes, and the prevalence of e-cigarettes.

Current smoking among Vietnamese men has declined to 42.3 percent from 45.3 percent in 2015. But the male smoking rate remained below the target of 39 percent, set out in the National Strategy on Tobacco Control, said Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the Health Ministry’s Department of Medical Service Administration.
