US transfers Guantanamo detainee to Algeria; 30 remain in prison

20 Apr 2023; MEMO: The US announced, Thursday, the transfer of long time Guantanamo Bay detainee, Said bin Brahim bin Umran Bakush, to his home country of Algeria, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, informed Congress of his intent to transfer Bakush to Algeria in February, the Pentagon said in a statement. A panel that reviews individual cases determined, 13 April, that it was no longer necessary to hold Bakush at the controversial prison, setting the stage for his release.

USA: Robert F. Kennedy formally launches 2024 White House bid

20 Apr 2023; MEMO: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nephew of former US President, John F. Kennedy who was assassinated, officially launched his bid, Wednesday, for the White House in 2024, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"I've come here today to announce my candidacy for Democratic nomination for President of the United States," Kennedy said at a campaign launch in Boston.

Kennedy filed paperwork 6 April with the Federal Election Commission to run for president.

16 Apr 2023; MEMO: The UN will commemorate Nakba Day, which marks the creation of the state of Israel in historical Palestine, for the first time in 2023, according to media reports Saturday, Anadolu reports.

"Commemorating the Nakba must be at the top of our priorities in order to preserve our narrative, which we must adhere to and convey to the whole world," the Palestinian WAFA news agency quoted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Kushner, who is the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, left his White House role in 2021. Ordinarily security service protection would end when an administration departs, however Kushner is said to have reaped the benefits of his time in office months after he left.

USA: Yemeni man will remain in Guantanamo prison despite court ruling he is no threat

13 Apr 2023; MEMO: A Yemeni man held in Guantanamo Bay for over 20 years without charge or trial will remain in detention despite a US court ruling that he does not pose a threat to the country. In an opinion yesterday over the ongoing case of Abdulsalam Al-Hela, the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit ruled that the authorities may not be allowed to keep a man imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay after he is no longer deemed a threat.
