Suspension of foreign work visas to free up to 5.25 lakh jobs in US: White House

Washington, Jun 23 (PTI) The temporary suspension of foreign work visas is expected to free up to 5,25,000 jobs in the US, senior officials said after President Donald Trump issued a proclamation to ban until the end of the year popular non-immigrant visas, including H-1B and L1, which benefit Indian IT professionals.

"The sum total of what these actions will do in terms of freeing up jobs over the course of the rest of 2020 is about 5,25,000 jobs," a senior administration official told reporters during a conference call on Monday.

Trump says China trade deal still on after adviser's remarks

Washington, Jun 23 (AP/PTI) President Donald Trump is tweeting that an initial trade agreement with China is still on after a top White House adviser's comments seemed to suggest it was over, spooking markets late Monday.

Trump tweeted: The China Trade Deal is fully intact. Hopefully they will continue to live up to the terms of the Agreement!"

Malaysia freezes recruitment of foreign workers until year end

PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — There will be no new intake of foreign workers in all sectors until the year-end as locals will be given priority to fill up vacancies, said Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan.  

“We will not allow (new) foreign workers until year-end. They (foreigners) can come as tourists, if they are allowed,” he told a news conference after launching the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) initiative under the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA), at the Human Resources Ministry here Monday.

Kenya-US trade talks delayed until pan-African trade bloc comes into force: Pres Kenyatta

NAIROBI, June 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Kenya has delayed talks on a trade deal with the United States until a pan-African trade bloc comes into force, President Uhuru Kenyatta said, likely holding up what would be Washington’s first such pact in sub-Saharan Africa.

US President Donald Trump and Kenyatta agreed in February to start formal talks on a bilateral trade pact that might help offset concerns about China’s expanding investment imprint on the continent.

US held off sanctioning Chinese over Uighurs to pursue trade deal: Pres Trump

WASHINGTON, June 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — US President Donald Trump says he did not sanction Chinese officials further over the detention of Muslims in Xinjiang as he was in the “middle of a trade deal”.

Trump told the Axios news site that achieving a “great” deal meant he could not impose “additional sanctions”.

China has held about a million Uighurs and other ethnic groups in camps in Xinjiang for indoctrination and punishment but denies mistreating them.

EU warns China over Hong Kong security law

BRUSSELS, June 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The EU warned China it would face “very negative consequences” if it presses ahead with a new security law for Hong Kong, stepping up pressure on Beijing over the controversial legislation.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council chief Charles Michel told China’s top leaders of their “grave concern” over the new law, which critics say will curb the financial hub’s autonomy and freedoms.

Iranian cargo ship carrying food supplies arrives in Venezuelan territorial waters

22 June 2020; IRNA: Iranian cargo ship Golesan is carrying food and medical supplies to combat coronavirus pandemic, Iran's Ambassador to Caracas Hojjat Soltani wrote on his Twitter page few hours ago.

Iranian-flagged cargo ship left Bandar Abbas on May 15 and now is in Venezuela's territorial waters.

Recently, Iranian oil tankers docked at Venezuela's port after passing the Caribbean Sea to help the friendly nation of Venezuela deal with shortage of fuel caused by the US sanctions against the country.

92,000 expats left Kuwait in the past 3 months

22 June 2020; MEMO: More than 92,000 expatriates left Kuwait in April, May and June through Kuwait International Airport, the Director of Operations at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) at Kuwait International Airport, Mansour Al-Hashimi, said.

Al-Hashimi said the expats included residents as well as violators of residency regulations who left aboard 600 flights.

36th ASEAN Summit To Be Held Via Video Conference On June 26

HANOI, June 22 (NNN-VNA) – The 36th ASEAN Summit will be held via video conference on June 26, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying, on Sunday.

As ASEAN’s chair in 2020, Vietnamese Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, will chair the opening session, plenary session and special sessions on women’s empowerment in digital era, as well as, dialogue between leaders of ASEAN and ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), among others.
