1.2m foreign workers to leave Saudi in 2020

17 June 2020; MEMO: Some 1.2 million foreign workers will leave Saudi Arabia this year due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, a report from the Jadwa Investment company has revealed.

According to the publication, nearly 178,000 expatriates have submitted requests to the Saudi Ministry of Interior to leave the kingdom between 22 April and 3 June, while more than 323,000 expatriates have already left this year.

Delhi: Petrol price hiked by 55 paise/litre, diesel by 60 paise; 11th straight day of increase

New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) Petrol price on Wednesday was hiked by 55 paise per litre and diesel by 60 paise a litre, marking the 11th consecutive day of increase in rates that now totals to Rs 6.02 for petrol and Rs 6.4 for diesel.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 77.28 per litre from Rs 76.73, while diesel rates were increased to Rs 75.79 a litre from Rs 75.19, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.

Beijing cancels hundreds of flights, trains as COVID-19 cases spike

Beijing, Jun 17 (PTI) Beijing moved on a war footing on Wednesday, cancelling hundreds of domestic flights and trains while ramping up the mass testing of 90,000 people to stem the spread of the coronavirus, as the city reported 31 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 137.

Two airports in Beijing have cancelled 1,255 domestic flights, nearly 70 per cent of the scheduled trips, the official media reported. Beijing currently does not operate international flights.

Covid 19: More than 8 million confirmed cases worldwide

PARIS, June 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — More than 8 million cases of novel coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide, with more than half in the United States and Europe, according to official sources.

At least 8,000,202 infections including 435,176 deaths, mostly in Europe, have been registered since the pandemic first emerged in China late last year.

Europe has 2,417,902 cases with 188,085 deaths. The USA has 2,110,182 cases and 116,081 deaths.

Chinese Envoy Asks U.S. To Lift Unilateral Sanctions On Syria

UNITED NATIONS, June 17 (NNN-XINHUA) – A Chinese envoy asked the United States to immediately lift unilateral sanctions against Syria.

Years of economic blockade have caused tremendous hardships on the Syrian people, in particular women and children. The sufferings caused by the devaluation of the Syrian currency and soaring commodities prices, including food prices, fall heavily on civilians across the country, said Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

India 9th largest recipient of FDI in 2019

United Nations, Jun 16 (PTI) India received USD 51 billion in foreign investment in 2019 and was the world's 9th largest recipient of foreign direct investments (FDI) in 2019, according to a report by the UN's trade body.

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in a report on Monday that a lower but positive economic growth in India in the post-COVID19 pandemic period and India's large market will continue to attract market-seeking investments to the country.

Pakistan does not meet minimum requirements of fiscal transparency: US report

Washington, Jun 16 (PTI) Pakistan does not meet the minimum requirement of fiscal transparency, an official US report has said, alleging that the country did not adequately disclose all government-guaranteed debt obligations, including financing to state-owned enterprises for the projects under the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The CPEC is a planned network of roads, railways, and energy projects linking China's resource-rich Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region with Pakistan's strategic Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea.

US reducing number of troops in Germany to 25K, confirms Trump

Washington, Jun 16 (PTI) The United States will reduce its troop strength in Germany from the nearly 52,000 at present to 25,000, President Donald Trump has said here.

In an interaction with reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump attributed the move to high costs and Germany being "delinquent" in its payment to NATO.

India: Gross tax collection falls 31 pc so far in June quarter

Mumbai, Jun 16 (PTI) Gross tax collection fell 31 per cent till June 15 of the current fiscal, with advance corporate tax mop-up declining 79 per cent, an official said on Tuesday.

Earlier, PTI erroneously reported that there was a 31 per cent decline in gross advance tax collection in the June quarter.

"Gross direct tax collection fell a full 31 per cent to Rs 1,37,825 crore in the first quarter of FY21, down from Rs 1,99,755 crore in the June 2019 quarter," an income tax official told PTI.
