13 Indian fishermen arrested by Lankan navy

Rameswaram, Dec 28 (PTI): Thirteen fishermen from Tamil Nadu, fishing at Nedunthivu off Sri Lankan coast, were arrested by the navy of the island nation on Saturday for allegedly poaching in its territorial waters.

According to the assistant director of Fisheries Kumaresan, the Lankan naval men took the fishermen from Pudukottai and their three mechanised boats and lodged them in Kangesanthurai in Jaffna.

Iranian FM To Visit Russia For Talks On Bilateral Ties, Regional Issues

TEHRAN, Iran, Dec 29 (NNN-TASNIM) – The Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to visit Russia on Monday (tomorrow), to hold talks with his Russian counterpart, on bilateral ties, as well as, regional and international developments, the Financial Tribune daily reported, Saturday.

Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif and Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, will exchange views on “prospects for further strengthening bilateral political dialogue and developing ties in trade, economic, cultural and other fields,” the report said.

Russia Spends Over 24 Billion USD On Weapons, Defence Activities In 2019

MOSCOW, Dec 29 (NNN-TASS) – The Russian Defence Ministry, spent more than 1.5 trillion rubles (24.2 billion U.S. dollars) this year, on weapons and state defence activities, Deputy Defence Minister, Aleksey Krivoruchko, said.

These funds made it possible to further develop the armament system of the Armed Forces, Krivoruchko told the defence ministry’s official newspaper, Krasnaya Zvezda, in an interview, published Saturday.

Turkey to launch TurkStream on Jan. 8

28 Dec 2019; AA: Turkey will launch TurkStream natural gas pipeline next month, energy and natural resources minister said on Friday.

"We will launch TurkStream on Jan. 8. We will be indispensable in international markets with natural gas pipelines coming from both the east and north," said Fatih Donmez in a meeting in the northwestern Bilecik province.

Turkey unveils first fully homemade electric car in $3.7bn bet on electric

28 Dec 2019; MEMO: Turkey unveiled its first fully domestically-produced car on Friday, saying it aimed to eventually produce up to 175,000 a year of the electric vehicle in a project expected to cost 22 billion lira ($3.7 billion) over 13 years, Reuters reports.

The project has been a long-time goal of President Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AK Party as a demonstration of the country’s growing economic power.

India: Exports to rebound in 2020 but growth to remain subdued

New Delhi, Dec 28 (PTI) The continuous contraction in India's exports is likely to stop next year but the rate of growth will be subdued on account of the uncertain global trade situation due to rising protectionism.

Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan said the current slowdown in exports is mainly due to a decline in petroleum products, which constitute 13.42 per cent of overall outward shipments.

Hong Kong protesters demand mainland Chinese traders leave

Hong Kong, Dec 28 (AP/PTI) Protesters shouting Liberate Hong Kong! marched through a shopping mall Saturday to demand that mainland Chinese traders leave the territory in a fresh weekend of anti-government tension.

The protest in Sheung Shui, near Hong Kong's boundary with the mainland, was part of efforts to pressure the government by disrupting economic activity.

Protests that began in June over a proposed China extradition law have spread to include demands for more democracy and other grievances.

Pakistan rolls out first batch of dual-seat fighter jets manufactured with China

Islamabad, Dec 28 (PTI) Pakistan has rolled out the first batch of its indigenous dual-seat fighter jets, manufactured in collaboration with its all-weather ally China.

To mark the occasion, a grand ceremony was held at the Aircraft Manufacturing Factory in Kamra near Islamabad on Friday, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) said in a statement.

Pakistan's Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing and Aviation Industries of China Executive Vice President Hao Zhaoping were present on the occasion.
