India: IMA scam: IAS officer held on graft charges

Bengaluru, Jul 8 (PTI) The special investigation team probing the IMA group ponzi scam Monday arrested the deputy commissioner of Bengauru urban district B M Vijay Shankar on charges of receiving Rs 1.5 crore from company founder Mohammed Mansoor Khan, police said.

The IAS officer had allegedly taken the bribe to give a favourable report after the RBI asked the state government to probe the companys businesses, they said.

With this, the number of people arrested by the SIT has gone up to five.

India: Rly to lay down 4th track from Panki to Bhaupur station

Kanpur: To lessen the load on the New Delhi-Howarh route,  the Railway Board has okayed to lay down the fourth track from Panki to Bhaupur station. The tender process has also started. The track would be ready by the end of next year, as was being claimed. 

The trains coming from Delhi stay either at Panki outer or Govindpuri outer or Diamond Crossing for signal to reach Kanpur Central station. Sometimes the trains take more than one hour to reach the railway station. This proposed new track would bring down the time. 

Global stocks sink after US jobs data hurt rate cut hopes

BEIJING (AP) — Global stocks tumbled Monday after unexpectedly strong U.S. employment data tempered hopes the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates.

Benchmarks in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Shanghai all declined.

Fed leaders have said they are ready to cut rates to support economic growth amid a tariff war with Beijing. But investors questioned whether the Fed will think that is needed after Friday’s data on June job creation.

China's top political advisor calls for joint efforts to improve business environment

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Wang Yang Monday called for joint efforts from authorities, market players and other stakeholders to improve the business environment.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, made the remarks here while attending a consultative symposium with leaders of other political parties on research findings regarding optimizing the business environment.

British Airways receives record fine for passenger data breach

8 July 2019; DW: British Airways has been fined 183.4 million pounds ($230 million, €205 million) by the United Kingdom's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) after computer hackers stole customer data last year, according to its parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG).

IAG said in a statement on Monday that the ICO intended to issue the penalty, which equated to 1.5% of its worldwide turnover for 2017, under the UK Data Protection Act.

Erdogan to attend Balkans summit in Bosnia

8 July 2019; AA: Turkey’s president will attend the two-day South East European Countries Cooperation Process (SEECP) Summit starting Monday in Bosnia, according to the presidential communications director. 

“President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 8-9 July 2019 to attend the Southeast European Cooperation Process Summit,” Fahrettin Altun wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

Qatar foreign investments rise by 6.6% in first quarter of 2019

8 July 2019; MEMO: Qatar’s inward foreign investments have grown by 6.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2019, local media reported yesterday.

Quoting a joint study by the Qatari planning ministry and the country’s central, the media pointed out that the total foreign investments in Qatar had amounted to 722.6 billion Qatari riyals ($199.7 billion) at the end of the first quarter of 2019.

Trump hits back as UK's top envoy calls his White House 'inept'

8 July 2019; AFP: US President Donald Trump hit back on Sunday and the UK launched an inquiry after leaked memos revealed Britain's ambassador in the US had described the president and his White House as "inept" and "uniquely dysfunctional".

Trump said Ambassador Kim Darroch had "not served the UK well" and that he and his administration were "not big fans" of the envoy.

Venezuela's Guaido announces fresh talks with Maduro

8 July 2019; DW: Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Sunday announced fresh talks with the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

Guaido, who declared himself acting president earlier this year, said the Norway-brokered talks aim "to establish a negotiation on the end of the dictatorship," referring to Maduro's regime.
