Trump meets Chinese vice premier at White House

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday met with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White House, saying major progress was made in the latest round of U.S.-China trade talks.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue, led the Chinese delegation for the two-day trade talks that concluded on Thursday in Washington.

Venezuela's Maduro Says Oil, Resources Behind US Intervention

Caracas, January 30; GANASHAKTI: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro assured Wednesday that the main reason for the growing pressure exerted by the United States against his government is the desire to seize its oil and mineral resources.

In an exclusive interview with the Russian outlet Sputnik, the president made reference to the mineral and natural wealth of his country as the reason behind Washington supporting coup efforts against his country.

India fiscal deficit to be at 3.4% of GDP this year

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said the fiscal deficit will be at 3.4 per cent of GDP this year.

Presenting the Budget for 2019-20 in the Lok Sabha, Goyal also said that current account deficit is likely to be 2.5 per cent of GDP this year.

He further said India attracted USD 239 billion in FDI (foreign direct investment) in the last five years.

India: GST collections top Rs 1 lakh cr in January

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) GST collections in January crossed Rs 1 lakh crore-mark after a gap of 2 months, the Finance Ministry said Thursday.

"The total gross GST Revenue collected in the month of January, 2019 has today crossed Rs 1 lakh crore. This has been a significant improvement over collection of Rs 94,725 crore during last month and Rs 89,825 crore during the same month last year," the ministry tweeted.

China appeals to US to accept its technology progress

It is “totally unreasonable to make random accusations,” said a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang.

5,000 garment workers sacked in Bangladesh over wage hike protest

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — An activist says more than 5,000 garment workers demanding wage hikes have been laid off while hundreds of them are facing police charges in the world’s second-largest garment export industry.

Kalpona Akter of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity said Thursday the firings came after thousands of workers took to the streets earlier this month in and around Dhaka, the nation’s capital.

One worker was killed and more than 50 were injured in clashes.

Alibaba profit up 37% but revenue growth eases

30 Jan 2019; AFP: Chinese e-commerce leader Alibaba said Wednesday that net profit increased 37 percent in the latest quarter as growth in cloud computing and other business lines helped offset a slowing expansion in core online retail.

The company's net profit grew to 33.0 billion yuan ($4.9 billion) in the October-December third quarter, compared to 24.1 billion yuan over the same period in 2017.
