India: Assam man fighting citizenship case dies by suicide

Morigaon (Assam), Feb 2 (PTI) A 60-year-old man, who was fighting a case at a Foreigners Tribunal despite his name appearing in the National Register for Citizens (NRC), has allegedly died by suicide in Morigaon district, officials said on Wednesday.

The family of Manik Das of Borkhal village claimed he ended his life because of "frustration and mental torture" he faced while attending the proceedings at the Tribunal to prove his Indian citizenship.

Lawyer with no criminal law experience tapped as next Israel Public Prosecutor

02 Feb 2022; MEMO: Israeli Justice Minister Gideon Sa'ar has tapped former prosecutor Gali Baharav-Miara to succeed Avichai Mandelblit as next Public Prosecutor, local media reported on Monday.

Baharav-Miara has worked for 30 years in the civil division of the State Prosecutor's Office. Her nomination by Sa'ar was widely criticised because she lacks experience in criminal law.

Lebanon to complain to UNSC against Israel violations

01 Feb 2022; MEMO: Lebanese President Michel Aoun yesterday called on his Foreign Minister, Abdallah Bou Habib, to file a complaint against the "Israeli violations" to the United Nations Security Council.

Syria's official SANA news agency yesterday reported that Israeli fighter jets had fired "several missiles" through Lebanese airspace at Damascus, adding that the Syrian air defences were able to "bring down most of the projectiles."

Blinken spoke to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on the phone, a statement said, and discussed "the importance of strengthening the US relationship with the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people."

Blinken also discussed with Abbas "the need to improve quality of life for Palestinians in tangible ways."

Israeli coach Grant faces FIFA case over sexual harassment

Jerusalem, Feb 1 (AP) Avram Grant, the former manager of the Chelsea soccer club and one of the most powerful men in Israeli sport, will be investigated by FIFA after being accused of sexually harassing multiple women in an investigative report.

Exposure, a program on Israel's Channel 12 TV, broadcast a series of interviews on Sunday with women saying that Grant had made unwanted advances while offering to help promote their careers. The women's voices were altered and their faces silhouetted to protect their identities.

India: Hijab row: Student moves Karnataka HC

Mangaluru, Feb 1 (PTI) A student of the girl's pre-university college in Udupi district has moved the Karnataka High Court with a prayer to allow the right to wear a hijab' (headscarf) inside the classroom.

The writ petition was filed on behalf of the student Resham Farooq, represented by her brother Mubarak Farooq.

The petitioner states that the students' right to wear a hijab is a fundamental right guaranteed under Article 14 and 25 of the Constitution and is an essential practice of Islam.

Sudanese protesters block border road with Egypt

30 Jan 2022; MEMO: Fresh protests erupted in Sudan on Sunday to demand full civilian rule, with protesters blocking the main land road with Egypt.

Protesters in the Northern State blocked the Sheryan al-Shimal road between Sudan and Egypt in protest of what they call the Egyptian government's support for the military takeover in Sudan, according to an Anadolu Agency reporter.

Israel demolishes another Palestinian home in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces demolished a new Palestinian home on Sunday, in the latest spate of demolitions in the occupied West Bank, according to a local official, Anadolu reports.

The house was razed in the village of Al-Aqaba in the northern West Bank area of Al-Aghwar in the Jordan Valley, said Moataz Bisharat, who is responsible for monitoring Israeli settlement building activity in Tubas.

He said Israeli forces cited lack of a building permit in Area C for the demolition.
