India: Jamia students narrate Sunday's ordeal

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Their belongings locked in the library and eyes still burning from teargas, several Jamia Millia Islamia students narrated their ordeal on Monday after a police crackdown inside the campus the evening before.

A day after the violence, the students expressed fear of being attacked again.

India: Gangraped and killed Nirbhaya's parents seek time-bound justice

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) It has been seven years to that fateful day when their daughter - who came to be known as 'Nirbhaya' - was brutally gangraped and thrown off a bus, but her parents still await justice.

The tag of rape capital became all the more pronounced after the Nirbhaya incident but her parents say it is a pan-India problem and cannot bring themselves to hate the national capital, which snatched their child.

India: BJP ally AGP to file plea in Supreme Court for revocation of CAB

Guwahati, Dec 15 (PTI) Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) , an ally of the ruling BJP, said on Sunday that it would file a petition in the Supreme Court praying for revocation of the amended Citizenship Act, party leader Kumar Deepak Das said.

He asserted that the AGP respected the sentiments of common people, who were wary that the law might threaten their identity and existence.

India: Protests against Citizenship law in Bengal, roads blockades at several places

Kolkata, Dec 15 (PTI) Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Nadia, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts of West Bengal which is witnessing protests against the amended Citizenship Act, police said on Sunday

Protesters blocked various important roads in Amdanga and Kalyani areas of North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts. They also blocked roads and railway tracks in various stations of the districts, the police said

In Domjur area of Howrah district, protesters organised road blockades and shouted slogans against the Narendra Modi government

India: Sitting BJP MLA, on bail in sexual assault case, shares stage with PM Modi

Baghmara; 15 Dec 2019 (UMM): Sitting MLA and BJP’s Baghmara candidate Dulu Mahto faces a sexual assault case and is currently out on provisional bail. Mahto shared the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a poll rally on Thursday.

Mahto called a BJP worker in 2015 to a guesthouse in connection with party work and sexually assaulted her. Mahto later told her that if she does not accept his proposal, she would be “destroyed”.

India: BJP expects gains from citizenship law

New Delhi, Dec 14 (PTI) Major protests in Assam and some other parts of the northeast against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act have taken many in the BJP by surprise but they believe that the gains for the party will be more than any loss from implementing the contentious law.

With the BJP in power in Assam and the rest of the northeast, either on its own or as a junior partner to a regional ally, party leaders are of the view that they are in a position to contain the situation but remain wary of its political fallout, especially in Assam.

Kashmir: Farooq Abdullah's detention extended by 3 months

Srinagar, Dec 14 (PTI) The detention of Farooq Abdullah, a three-term chief minister of erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, was extended on Saturday by three months and he would continue to remain at his residence that has been declared a sub-jail, officials said here.

The case of Abdullah, also a five-term parliamentarian, was reviewed by the advisory board of the Home Department of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir which recommended extension of his detention under the PSA, they said.

Protests intensify against India’s religion-based citizenship law

NEW DELHI, Dec 14 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Protests against India’s religion-based Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) have intensified, with police in New Delhi stopping thousands of students from marching towards the Indian parliament on Friday.

Dozens of protesting Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university students were injured as police beat them with sticks and fired teargas shells.

UN General Assembly Reiterates Demand For Israel To Comply With Resolutions On Occupied Syrian Golan

NEW YORK, Dec 14 (NNN-SANA) – The United Nations General Assembly reiterated its demand for Israel to comply with resolutions on the occupied Syrian Golan, particularly resolution No. 497 for 1981, which considers Israel’s decision to impose its law and legal jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan to be null, void, and without international legal effect.
