Brazil Reports 627 More COVID-19 Deaths, 20,647 New Cases

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 16 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Brazil reported Monday that, its COVID-19 death toll has climbed to 43,959, as 888,271 people have tested positive for the coronavirus nationwide.

In the past 24 hours, the disease claimed 627 lives, and 20,647 new infections were detected, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

The southeast state of Sao Paulo is hit the hardest, with 181,460 infections and 10,767 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 80,946 infections and 7,728 deaths; and Ceara, with 79,462 cases and 4,999 deaths.

Brazil reports decline in new COVID-19 cases for four days running

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 15. /TASS/: The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has reached 867,624 in Brazil, with 17,110 new cases documented in the past 24 hours, the country’s Health Ministry informed on Sunday.

The daily new cases figure has been declining for four days running, with a record number reported on June 10 (32,913 new cases). The number of deaths from the virus has also been declining. In the past 24 hours, 612 deaths from the virus have been reported, with the total death toll reaching 43,332.

Brazil: COVID-19 Caseload Tops 850,000

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 14 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Brazil has so far reported 850,514 COVID-19 cases with 42,720 deaths, the country’s health ministry reported on Saturday.

In the last 24 hours, the country registered 892 new deaths from the virus with 21,704 new cases, according to the health ministry.

Sao Paulo, the epicentre of the virus and the country’s most populous state, registered 172,875 cases and 10,581 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 78,836 cases and 7,592 deaths, and Ceara with 76,429 cases and 4,829 deaths.

Brazil overtakes Britain with second-highest COVID-19 death toll

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Brazil has overtaken Britain to be the country with the second-highest death toll of COVID-19 in the world, according to data from the Brazilian Health Ministry.

The ministry on late Friday confirmed 909 new deaths over the last 24 hours, taking the country's total deaths to 41,828, while the death toll in Britian is 41,566.

Brazil deaths top 40,000, 1.5m cases in Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazil has surpassed 40,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus and 800,000 cases, according to the latest figures from the health ministry.

The news came as the number of Latin American cases of the virus broke through the 1.5 million barrier, according to a count based on official figures in the region.

Latin America has also reported more than 73,600 deaths.

Brazil obeys court order to resume providing full virus data

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian Supreme Court justice ordered the government of President Jair Bolsonaro to resume publication of full COVID-19 data, including the cumulative death toll, following allegations the government was trying to hide the severity of the pandemic in Latin America’s biggest country.

The government complied with the decision Tuesday afternoon.

Brazil's Guedes says government measures have saved 10 million jobs

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil’s government has spent 700 billion reais ($143 billion), more than any emerging country, in emergency crisis-fighting measures, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said on Tuesday, adding that 10 million formal jobs have been saved.

Speaking at government cabinet meeting broadcast on TV, Guedes also said emergency aid for informal workers will be extended for two months, a period which will be used to prepare the country for a return to work with extra safety measures.

Brazilians hold rival rallies for and against president

BRASILIA, June 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazilians took to the streets in Sao Paulo and Brasilia for rival demonstrations for and against President Jair Bolsonaro, who has been widely criticised over his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds of people banging drums and setting off flares marched through the capital to denounce the far-right president.

Demonstrators, many dressed in black and wearing face masks, held banners saying: “Everyone for democracy”, “Against racism and fascism” and “Terrorism is the government’s policy of extermination.”
