Study finds coal trains increase air pollution in U.S. urban areas

LOS ANGELES, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Coal trains and terminal operations add a significant amount of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution to U.S. urban areas, according to a new study by the University of California, Davis.

The study, published in the journal Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health, quantifies pollution, with health and environmental justice implications for San Francisco bay area.

US: Small plane crashes in Los Angeles, 1 killed

LOS ANGELES, April 30 (NNN-XINHUA) — One person was killed after a small plane crashed Saturday night in a mountainous area here in Los Angeles, authorities said.

The incident was reported about 8:09 p.m. local time, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

Air Traffic Control asked the LAFD to check a large swath of mountainous territory in the area after they reportedly lost radar contact with the small single-engine airplane believed to be traveling between two Los Angeles-area airports — Santa Monica Airport and Van Nuys Airport.

USA: California's fire season under way weeks after heavy rain and snow

LOS ANGELES, April 28 (Reuters) - Barely five weeks after the last bout of heavy rain and snow in California's historically wet winter, firefighters on Friday battled the state's first large wildfire of the year in rugged foothills east of Los Angeles.

The Nob fire has scorched some 200 acres of brush and grass in the San Bernardino National Forest since erupting on Wednesday, with 25% of the blaze's perimeter contained by Thursday night, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Texas man indicted for alleged threat to kill US Rep. Waters

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal grand jury indicted a Houston man Friday for allegedly calling the office of California Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters several times last year and leaving threatening voice mails, including saying he intended to “cut your throat.”

Brian Michael Gaherty, 60, was charged in the indictment with four counts of making threats in interstate communications and four counts of threatening a U.S. official, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles said in a statement.

USA: SpaceX confirms initiating termination command after rocket losing control

LOS ANGELES, April 20 (Xinhua) -- SpaceX said on Thursday it triggered termination command after its giant Starship rocket lost control during an inaugural test flight.

The rocket, the most powerful ever built, got off the launch pad at 8:33 a.m. Central Time Thursday from SpaceX's Starbase in Boca Chica, U.S. state of Texas. It exploded minutes after liftoff.

The vehicle experienced multiple engines out during the test flight, lost altitude, and began to tumble, said SpaceX. The flight termination system was commanded on both the booster and the spacecraft.
