India: RS MP raises issue of shortage of sanitisers, masks

New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI) Rajya Sabha Congress MP Ripun Bora on Wednesday highlighted problems being faced by people due to shortage and high prices of sanitisers and masks amid outbreak of coronavirus.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the House, he said the government has asked people to take precautionary steps like cleaning of hands.

Diplomatic missions assisting hundreds of Malaysians stranded in India

NEW DELHI, March 18 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia’s diplomatic missions are helping hundreds of Malaysian citizens stranded in India due to travel disruptions following the coronavirus outbreak.

About 200 Malaysians were stuck in south India and 73 were in New Delhi looking for flights to get home, Malaysian diplomats and other sources told Bernama.

Malaysians travelling in India were stranded after the Indian government announced new measures against the coronavirus outbreak.

India: BJP making mockery of democracy: Cong

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) The Congress on Monday accused the BJP of making a "mockery" of democracy and insulting it by its attempts to engineer defections in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said instead of dealing with the pressing issues of unemployment, coronavirus outbreak, productivity and lack of investment, the BJP is busy deciding on which government to topple by "illegal and unfair" means.

India: CAA does not violate fundamental rights, Centre tells SC

New Delhi, Mar 17 (PTI) The Centre Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 does not violate any fundamental right.

The central government, in its 129-page affidavit in response to the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of CAA, termed the legislation legal and asserted that there was no question of it violating constitutional morality.

India: Number of coronavirus patients rises to 114

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) COVID-19 extended its footprint in India on Monday with the eastern state of Odisha reporting its first coronavirus patient and one new case each in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kerala, taking the total count to 114, Health Ministry officials said.

The Maharashtra government also reported four more patients of the infection, as concerns over the pandemic steered decisions across all sectors and states, including in politically volatile Madhya Pradesh.

India: SC takes suo moto cognisance of overcrowding of prisons in the wake of Corona

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday took suo moto cognisance of overcrowding and infrastructure of prisons across the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and L N Rao issued a notice to the Director General, Prison, and chief secretary of all states and union territories seeking their response by March 20 on steps taken for prevention of COVID-19.

The court also asked all states and union territories to depute an officer on March 23 who could assist the court in the matter.

India: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad launches Azad Samaj Party

New Delhi, Mar 15 (PTI) Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad launched his political outfit the Azad Samaj Party on Sunday -- the birth anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram.

Before launching his party at an event held in Safai village in Noida, the 37-year-old Dalit leader made Kanshi Ram's photograph his Twitter profile picture. He also launched the party flag -- a white band between two blue strips with Azad Samaj Party written in the middle.

4th batch of 53 Indians evacuated from Iran: Jaishankar

New Delhi, Mar 16 (PTI) A fourth batch of 53 Indians returned to India from Iran on Monday, taking the total number of people evacuated from the coronavirus-hit country to 389.

This comes a day after over 230 Indians were brought back from Iran to New Delhi and quarantined at the Indian Army Wellness Centre in Jaisalmer, the third batch to be evacuated from that country.
