India: Active COVID-19 cases in country highest in 208 days

New Delhi, Jan 11 (PTI) India logged 168,063 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 35,875,790 which includes 4,461 cases of the Omicron variant, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday

The active cases rose to 821,446, the highest in 208 days, while the death toll climbed to 484,213 with 277 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated

India: Elections right time to defeat hatred: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the upcoming assembly elections are a right time to defeat hatred.

Assembly elections in five states including in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases starting February 10 to March 7. The counting shall take place on March 10, the Election Commission has announced.

"This is the right opportunity to defeat hatred.#Elections2022, " Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Defence minister tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a tweet, he said he has "mild symptoms" and is under home quarantine.

"I have tested positive for Corona today with mild symptoms. I am under home quarantine. I request everyone who have recently come in my contact to isolate themselves and get tested," Singh said.

India: COVID-19, 179,723 new cases in a day

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) India saw a single-day rise of 179,723 coronavirus infections taking the total tally to 35,707,727, including 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant reported across 27 states and union territories so far, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Monday

The number of active cases has increased to 723,619, the highest in around 204 days, while the death toll has climbed to 483,936 with 146 fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated

Of the total 4,033 cases of Omicron variant,?1,552?have recovered or migrated

India: EVM is no issue now: CEC Sushil Chandra

New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) The use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) is no issue now, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said on Saturday, asserting that there is a sense of pride that India has developed a machine which gives accurate and faster results.

His remarks came at a press conference convened to announce the assembly election schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand.

Responding to a question on parties losing elections questioning the credibility of EVMs, Chandra said, "EVM is no issue now."

India: Breach in PM's security: SC to take up matter on Monday

India: No plan to impose lockdown in Delhi yet: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said there is no plan to impose a lockdown as of now in the city, and that there will be no need for it if people wear masks.

He said that on Sunday, the city is likely to report 22,000 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours.

He appealed to the public to wear masks and not panic.

India's Covid mortality maybe 6-7 times higher than officially reported: Study

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) About 3.2 million people could have died from Covid in India by September last year, six-seven times higher than reported officially, according to a study based on one independent and two government data sources.

The research, published in the journal Science on Thursday, used an independent nationally representative survey of 137,289 adults in all states and union territories interviewed from March 2020 to July 2021.

India: Delhi court acquits four men in riots case

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) A Delhi court on Friday acquitted four men in a case related to robbing, vandalising and setting a house and shop on fire during the riots in the national capital in 2020.

Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat acquitted Dinesh Yadav, Tinku, Sahil and Sandeep. "All the accused have been acquitted. All accused are directed to file their respective bail bonds on Monday i.e. January 10, the judge ordered.

India: Lupin launches Molnulup for COVID-19 treatment

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) Drugmaker Lupin on Friday said it has launched antiviral medication Molnupiravir under the brand name Molnulup in the country for the treatment of COVID-19.

Molnupiravir has been given emergency use authorisation by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for treatment of adult COVID-19 patients who have a high risk of progression of the disease, including hospitalisation.

"The approval for Molnulup is timely as India is again experiencing an upward spike in COVID-19 incidences.
