Australia's most populous state hit by severe rains, floods

Sydney, Mar 21 (AP-PTI) Australia's most populous state of New South Wales on Sunday issued more evacuation orders following the worst flooding in decades.

The New South Wales State Emergency Services responded to 640 calls for help on Saturday night, including 66 for flood rescues.

USA: Biden meets with UN Security Council members to talk climate

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden told the permanent representatives of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that the United States will join the international body’s Group of Friends on Climate and Society.

The group was launched in 2018 with a focus on the impact that national security policy has on climate change.

New Delhi, Mar 15 (PTI) The BJP is not serious about tackling pollution in Delhi which is evident from the fact that the Centre allowed the Commission for Air Quality Management Ordinance to lapse, the AAP claimed on Monday.

Addressing a press conference here, AAP spokesperson Atishi questioned the Central government over the ordinance getting lapsed.

India: Sharjeel moves HC, seeks quashing of FIR against him over speech

Mumbai, Mar 5 (PTI) Activist Sharjeel Usmani has approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Pune police for allegedly promoting enmity among different groups in his speech made at the Elgar Parishad event held in January this year.

In the petition filed earlier this week, Usmani termed the FIR as "frivolous and baseless", and said it has been registered "on the basis of certain select statements taken out of context".

India on track to achieving climate goals: PM

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the country is on track to achieving its climate goals well before the target date as it switches over to energy-efficient mediums and uses waste to generate energy.

Speaking after accepting the 2021 CERAWeek Global Energy & Environment Leadership Award for his commitment to energy sustainability and the environment, Modi said climate change and calamity are major challenges facing the world.

Oil spill off Israel coast reaches Lebanon's shores

23 Feb 2021; MEMO: Lebanon's caretaker prime minister Hassan Diab said yesterday he was following up on an oil spill that may have originated from a ship passing near the Israeli coast and has now reached the southern shores of Lebanon, Reuters reported.

Israeli officials said on Sunday they were trying to find the ship responsible for the spill that drenched much of its Mediterranean shoreline with tar, an environmental blow that will take months or years to clean up.

India: Climate activist Disha Ravi case: have not leaked anything to media, police tells Delhi HC

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) Delhi Police Thursday told the Delhi High Court that it has not leaked any material to the media in relation to its probe in the FIR against climate activist Disha Ravi for her alleged involvement in sharing a toolkit backing the ongoing farmers' protest.

The court was hearing Ravi's plea to restrain police from leaking to the media any probe material in relation to the FIR lodged against her.

The submission was made before Justice Prathiba M Singh by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the police.

India: Hyderabad recognised as a '2020 Tree City of the World'

Hyderabad, Feb 18 (PTI): Hyderabad has been recognised as a '2020 Tree City of the World' by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.

The recognition is for the commitment of the city to growing and maintaining urban forest.

World leaders applaud US formal return to Paris climate pact

(AP) --- The United States is back in the Paris climate accord, just 107 days after it left.

While Friday’s return is heavily symbolic, world leaders say they expect America to prove its seriousness after four years of being pretty much absent. They are especially anticipating an announcement from the U.S. in coming months on its goal for cutting emissions of heat-trapping gases by 2030.
