AU deploys observers for general elections in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) has already deployed its long-term observers for Ethiopia's general elections scheduled to take place on June 21.

Following an invitation from Ethiopia, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has approved the deployment of both long- and short-term AU observers to the general elections in the Eastern African country, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc on Saturday.

UN: FAO Warns Renewed Desert Locust Infestation In Ethiopia, Somalia

ADDIS ABABA, Jun 5 (NNN-ENA) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), yesterday warned, swarms of desert locusts are expected to descend on parts of Ethiopia and Somalia.

“Despite an earlier decline, the current upsurge prevails in the Horn of Africa, where good rains allowed breeding to continue with hatching and more hopper bands forming in eastern Ethiopia and northern Somalia,” said the latest FAO report.

Africa's COVID-19 cases surpass 4.83 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 4,830,229 as of Monday noon, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 130,451 while 4,365,227 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

Ethiopians criticise United States at pro-government rally

(Reuters) --- Ethiopian pro-government demonstrators denounced the United States on Sunday for imposing restrictions on aid over the Tigray conflict, at a massive rally organised by the authorities to show support for their positions.

More than 10,000 people attended the rally, some carrying banners written in English, Arabic and Amharic. Slogans included: "USA show us your neutrality", "Ethiopia doesn't need a caretaker", and "Fill the dam", a reference to a huge Nile dam opposed by Egypt and Sudan.

ADDIS ABABA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 4,802,687 as of Friday evening, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic stands at 129,753 while 4,343,800 patients across the continent have recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

UN alarmed at soldiers detaining displaced from Tigray camps

(Reuters) --- The United Nations refugee agency voiced deep concern on Friday at reports of soldiers taking hundreds of people away from displacement camps in the Tigray region of Ethiopia earlier this week, saying such sites should be a safe haven.

Three aid workers and a doctor told Reuters this week that Eritrean and Ethiopian soldiers forcibly detained more than 500 young men and women from four camps for displaced people in the town of Shire in the northern region on Monday night.

ADDIS ABABA, May 25 (NNN-ENA) – The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 4,759,772 as of yesterday noon, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), said.

The Africa CDC, the specialised healthcare agency of the African Union, said, the death toll from the pandemic stood at 128,463, while 4,303,326 patients across the continent, had recovered from the disease.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt are the countries with the most cases on the continent, according to the Africa CDC.

Ethiopia says Eritrean troops killed civilians in Tigray

ADDIS ABABA, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Ethiopia for the first time accused troops from neighbouring Eritrea of killing 110 civilians in a massacre in the war-hit Tigray region.

The attorney general’s office sharply contradicted law enforcement officials who claimed earlier this month that the “great majority” of those killed in the city of Axum were fighters, not civilians.

The killings in Axum in late November represent one of the deadliest incidents of the six-month-old war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

Covid-19: African countries acquire over 38 million vaccines – Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, May 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — African countries have acquired 38.03 million Covid-19 vaccines so far, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) disclosed.

The Africa CDC, the specialised healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union, said 22.4 million Covid-19 doses have been administered, out of the over 38.03 million acquired by member states.
