Hungarian government declares state of energy emergency

BUDAPEST, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The Hungarian government declared a state of energy emergency and adopted a 7-point plan on energy security, with special focus on the supply security of Hungarian families, Gergely Gulyas, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, told a press conference on Wednesday.

The measures will take effect on August 1.

Gulyas blamed the prolonged conflict in Ukraine and the European Union's sanctions against Russia for the steep rise in energy prices in Europe, culminating now in what he called an energy crisis.

Another contender ousted from race to replace UK PM Johnson

LONDON (AP) — Conservative Party lawmakers in Britain on Thursday knocked one of the six remaining contenders out of the contest to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as front-runner Rishi Sunak worked to stave off momentum from surprise challenger Penny Mordaunt.

Attorney General Suella Braverman secured the fewest votes from her colleagues, 27, and was eliminated from the race, leaving five contenders.

Outbreaks from animals in Africa surge by 60% in last decade

LONDON (AP) — The number of outbreaks of diseases that jumped from animals to humans in Africa has surged by more than 60% in the last decade, the World Health Organization said, a worrying sign the planet could face increased animal-borne diseases like monkeypox, Ebola and coronavirus in the future.

There has been a 63% rise in the number of animal diseases breaching the species barrier from 2012 to 2022, as compared to the decade before, the U.N. health agency said in a statement on Thursday.

Officials: Russian missiles kill at least 20 in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian missiles that struck a city in central Ukraine killed at least 20 people and wounded about 90 more Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said. The country’s president called the attack “an open act of terrorism” against civilians in locations without military value.

Ukraine’s national police said three missiles hit an office building and damaged nearby residential buildings in Vinnytsia, which is located 268 kilometers (167 miles) southwest of the capital, Kyiv.

EU Foreign Relations Committee adopts recommendations in favour of Palestine

The Committee called on the European Commission to continue providing financial support to the Palestinian Authority in a timely manner in order not to obstruct the work of its institutions.

Russia registers 3,929 coronavirus cases, 42 deaths in 24 hours, says crisis center

MOSCOW, July 13. /TASS/: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Russia grew by 3,929 in the past 24 hours, while the number of deaths increased by 42, the federal anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Wednesday.

As many as 3,002 cases and 48 deaths were registered in the country on the previous day, and 18,472,239 and 381,711 since the beginning of the pandemic, respectively.

Russia awaits progress on Kaliningrad transit embargo, issue unresolved — Kremlin

MOSCOW, July 13. /TASS/: Moscow is anticipating progress on the Lithuania transit embargo against Kaliningrad though the predicament is still not completely solved, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Wednesday.

"So far, this situation has not been finalized. We are awaiting some progress yet right now we cannot state that this problem has been resolved," he said in response to a request to comment on reports that the EU and Russia have allegedly reached agreements on the transit of cargoes to the region.

Belgium: EC recognizes rail transit to Kaliningrad as allowed with certain conditions

BRUSSELS, July 13. /TASS/: The European Commission (EC) released on Wednesday the guidance on sanctions against Russia, indicating that rail transit to Kaliningrad is allowed with certain conditions.

"This guidance confirms that the transit of sanctioned goods by road with Russian operators is not allowed under the EU measures. No such similar prohibition exists for rail transport, without prejudice to Member States' obligation to perform effective controls," the EC said.
