UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (NNN-UPI) — U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for countries throughout the world to work to take action in six areas to limit the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, reported United Press International (UPI).

28 May 2020; MEMO: Egypt’s state-run media has launched an incitement campaign against doctors after the medical union warned the country’s health system was about to collapse.

On Monday, Egypt’s Medical Syndicate said that 19 doctors had died of coronavirus in the country whilst 350 had been infected.

It lamented the lack of PPE and the failure to provide isolation units for sick medics and said that the Health Ministry was falling short of its duty to protect doctors.

New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday asked the central government to unlock its coffers and help the needy affected by the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

In a video message posted as part of the Congress' 'Speak Up India' campaign, she lamented that even though the country is passing through a serious economic crisis with loss of livelihood due to the pandemic and the lockdown, the central government has not heard the cries of pain and trauma of people.

RAMALLAH, May 28 (NNN-WAFA) – Official institutions in Palestine, on Wednesday, resumed work after several months’ lock-down, all over the West Bank, due to the COVID-19.

The move is part of the Palestinian government’s decision, to ease the restrictions and precautionary measures, against the virus, which have been taken since Mar 5.

Palestine on Wednesday (yesterday), said that, eight new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, bringing the total number of cases in the Palestinian territories to 613.

PRETORIA, May 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared May 31 as the National Day of Prayer to strengthen national unity in fighting COVID-19.

“On this day, wherever we may be, I call upon you to turn your thoughts to all who have been affected by this pandemic,” the president said in a televised address, adding that the National Day of Prayer is dedicated to the remembrance of those who are working to keep South African safe, and those who are suffering and grieving.

LONDON, May 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UN environmental agency said it has received a request from host nation Britain to postpone this year’s global climate conference until November 2021 because of the coronavirus.

This year’s COP 26 summit had been due to take place in the Scottish city of Glasgow in November before the pandemic forced a rethink and the possibility of rescheduling for March 2021.

But it now appears it could take place much later.

UNITED NATIONS, May 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic could push as many as 86 million more children into poverty by the end of 2020, a joint study by Save the Children and UNICEF showed.

That would bring the total number of children affected by poverty worldwide to 672 million, an increase of 15 percent over last year, the two aid agencies said in a statement.

Nearly two-thirds of those children overall live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
