India: City still not bereft of Corona cases till recently

KANPUR: City is still not safe from the deadly virus as four new positive cases have been reported on Tuesday. Therefore, the total tally has reached 337.

The lockdown in the city's different locations continues. Four days are remaining in completion of the third phase of the lockdown. Will it continue further?   It is this question, disturbing everyone at the critical moment.

However, the chief medical officer Dr Ashok Shukla said two cases have from reported from Deputy Padao locality while other cases are of migrants.

India: Karnataka to open temples from June 1

Bengaluru, May 26 (PTI) Temples in Karnataka, closed for over two months due to the COVID-19 induced lockdown, will be opened for public from June 1, making the southern state the first in the country to allow devotees in shrines ever since the curbs kicked in.

The national lockdown enforced by the Centre to stem the spread of Coronavirus since March 25, and in its fourth leg now, is slated till May 31.

India: Identify private hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients for free or at nominal cost: SC to Centre

New Delhi, May 27 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Centre to identify private hospitals where COVID-19 infected patients could get treatment for free or at a nominal cost.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, hearing the matter via video-conferencing, observed that there are private hospitals which have been given land either free of cost or at nominal rates and they should treat coronavirus infected patients for free.

France bans hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 amid safety concerns

PARIS (Reuters) - The French government on Wednesday cancelled a decree allowing hospital doctors to administer hydroxychloroquine as a treatment to patients suffering severe forms of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

The move, which takes immediate effect, is the first by a country since the World Health Organization said on Monday it was pausing a large trial of the malaria drug on COVID-19 patients due to safety concerns.

Egypt: Doctors resign en masse after death of colleague who wasn’t tested

26 May 2020; MEMO: Doctors at Mounira General Hospital have resigned on mass to protest against the death of their colleague from coronavirus.

The doctors said Walid Yahya, 32, was not given a test or access to a bed in ICU despite displaying symptoms of the virus.

Walid’s death has underscored an ongoing crisis in Egypt since the spread of COVID-19 where doctors have repeatedly criticised the government for failing to protect them, including providing adequate PPE.

Brazil travel ban by US to start 2 days earlier on Tuesday

Washington, May 26 (AP/PTI) A ban on foreign travellers arriving in the US from Brazil due to the surge in coronavirus cases there will now take effect late Tuesday, two days earlier than previously announced.

The ban had been set to go into effect late Thursday. The White House announced the change Monday without explanation.

Brazil is second to the US in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, and has seen cases surge in recent days.

India: Priyanka questions Aditynath's claim on 75% infected migrant workers

Lucknow, May 25 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday asked UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to explain the basis of the statement in which he has reportedly claimed that a large number of workers returning from other states are infected with coronavirus.

The Congress leader also shared a news clip on the CM's statement on her Twitter handle.

India: Corona positive Maha minister hospitalised

Mumbai, May 25 (PTI) A Maharashtra cabinet minister and senior Congress leader, who has tested positive for coronavirus, was on Monday admitted in a hospital here, a close aide said.

He became the second cabinet minister after NCP leader Jitendra Awhad to test positive for coronavirus.

The minister had contracted the infection a few days back and is undergoing treatment, a Health official had said on Sunday.

India: Centre's lockdown strategy has failed: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, May 26 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the four phases of nationwide lockdown have "failed" and not given the results that Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected.

Addressing a press conference, he asked the central government to clarify its strategy as far as opening up of India is concerned and how it intends to support migrants and states.

"What is the central government's plan to go forward as the disease is growing exponentially in the country," he said.

India: 20 fresh corona cases reported in CISF

New Delhi, May 26 (PTI) The Central Industrial Security Force on Tuesday reported 20 fresh coronavirus cases, with 18 from its unit that guards the Delhi airport, officials said.

The over 1.62 lakh personnel strong force has a total of 78 active COVID-19 cases, while 132 personnel have recovered from the disease till now.
